- ABC - Atlanta Bread Company, a popular soup and sandwich place and a good place to study.
- Chicken Finger Tuesday - The DH serves Chicken fingers every Tuesday. Students anticipate Chicken Finger Tuesday from Wednesday to Monday.
- CLPs - Cultural Life Program. Every student has to get 36 CLP credits to graduate.
- E-field - The field in front of Blackwell and next to the UC. There are also sand volleyball and basketball courts there.
- First Class - Furman’s e-mail system.
- Frad - Freshman Advisor; upperclassmen who live on freshman halls without the full responsibility of enforcing housing rules. There are three on every freshman hall.
- FUPO - Furman University Police.
- FUSAB - Furman University Student Activities Board; the student group responsible for planning most campus activities.
- GER - General Education Requirement, classes that every student must take to graduate.
- HES - Refers to the Health and Exercise Science department and HES-10, a general education requirement for all students.
- O-Week - Freshman Orientation Week, the week before classes start every September.
- P-Den - The Pala Den Food Court in the University Center.
- Recruitment - Synonym for rush (see the Words to Know section).
- The DH - The Dining Hall.
- The Mall - The Furman Mall, or the grassy area leading up to the PAC.
- The PAC - The Physical Activities Center. This building houses the workout facilities, gym, climbing well, pool, and the health and exercise sciences department.
- The UC - The University Center. This is the center of student activity on campus.

Tips to Succeed
- Ask people what professors and classes to take before you register.
- Check your e-mail all the time.
- Don’t fall behind on your CLPs.
- Go see your professors outside of class, even if it’s only once—it really helps.
- Go to class.
Urban Legends
- Furman is named after a Southern slave-owner . . . oh wait, that one’s true.
- There is a ghost that lives in Judson Hall.
- Whoever you kiss under the Bell Tower is the person you are going to marry.
Traditions
- Fountain Float - On the last day of class every spring, seniors bring the beach to Furman. They grab beach toys, rafts, and any other kind of float and go for a swim in the fountain in front of the library.
- Freshman Birthday Dunk - It’s a long-standing tradition that everyone gets thrown into the lake on their birthday at least once during their time at Furman. If you somehow escape it freshman year, you will usually get thrown in next time around, even if there’s snow on the ground.
- Homecoming Competition - During the week before homecoming, sororities, fraternities, and other campus organizations compete in skits, banner decorating, float building, and spirit competitions all centered around a theme like “Superheros” or “One-Hit Wonders.” The floats are built during the Friday night carnival on the mall, and winners are announced at half time of the football game.
- Key Shaking - Before each kick-off at the football games, students raise their keys in the air and shake them until the ball is kicked. Then they yell “FU!” in unison.
- President’s Picnic - During Orientation Week, the entire freshman class is invited to a barbecue picnic on the lawn of the president’s house. Everyone gets to tour the house and meet the Dr. Shi, who is said to never forget a student’s name after meeting them the first time.
School Spirit
While Furman students may not have as much school spirit as students at other schools, most are still full of Furman pride. Most sporting events have low turn-outs, but the football games are the place to be on fall weekends. The fraternity and sorority members usually dress up, and others proudly wear their purple and white. However, we are not the most dedicated fans, as the student section has often emptied by the fourth quarter. But with an acronym like FU, it’s not difficult to have school spirit. Students can’t wait for the cheerleaders to lead them in their favorite school cheer: “FU one time! FU two times! . . .” Well, you get the idea.
