Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Geneva has NCAA Division III status and also participates in the PAC (Presidents' Athletic Conference). Geneva's no powerhouse school, but the men’s basketball team consistently follows a well-trod path to the playoffs, and plenty of other sports perform well, too. The football team maintains a record above .500 and claims one of the top programs in the country, while both track and cross country teams routinely send runners to nationals. Home games garner a respectable attendance, with Tornado Towels waving proudly, especially for big games and special occasions—Homecoming packs the stadium to standing-room only. Reeves Stadium recently got a facelift in the form of a brand-new entryway, synthetic turf, press box, and other goodies.

Intramural sports get as much attention as varsity sports on campus. Basketball, indoor soccer, and ultimate Frisbee are always popular, among a long list of sports offered. Most students join intramurals looking for a friendly contest, so competition is usually fierce, but fun. Club sports are also great options. Some club teams, such as men’s and women’s rugby, play other schools like Cal U (California University of Pennsylvania) and Grove City College. Geneva also boasts its own sport: "Little Bat," played on the tennis courts with a tennis ball and miniature baseball bat.

Huh? What?

The athletics at Genevas are important to some but not to others. It is up to one's own personal intrest to become involved. If you like football and not baseball you don't go to that.

Choices

I was surprised by the variety of intramurals here at school. There is golf and ultimate Frisbee, no swimming though. The important games are attended well. The rest are kind of ignored. Professors often go.

Geneva College Atheltics

I feel that the athletics department needs some serious work. We do not have the resources or the management to compete with other local schools.

Most Popular Sports

This is Western Pennsylvania at its Western Pennsylvanian-est, so men's football is the main attraction. Both men's and women’s basketball, kicked off by the annual Midnight Madness event, are a close second, followed by women's volleyball. Recent success has drawn attention to men's soccer, as well.

Club rugby, cross-country/track,
women's tennis

School Spirit

School spirit for the Golden Tornadoes is a low-key affair. Students often sport Geneva hoodies, shirts, and sweatpants—there’s even a Geneva Snuggie—and generally want the GTs to succeed. A core of screaming diehards never misses a game, notably the superfans: these students are identified by their full-body black and gold paint, vuvuzelas, and volume.

Getting Tickets

Students get free admission to athletic events. Seats are first-come, first-served, and the 5,500-seat stadium rarely sells out—though at games like Homecoming, seats are scarce.

Best Place to Take a Walk

The neighborhood surrounding the College makes for wonderful walking grounds. The half-mile walk to Sheetz is popular among couples and hungry college students alike. There is also a nice flat trail by the railroad tracks near the river, but a steep hill makes it difficult to access.

Did You Know?
  • Cal Hubbard and Larry Bruno both began their professional athletic careers at Geneva.
  • Geneva football coach Geno Demarco is in the Beaver County Sports Hall of Fame.
  • Geneva is the "birthplace of college basketball," having hosted the first collegiate game in 1892.
