Judging campus strictness is a relative business. In comparison to most secular institutions, there are a lot of rules: mandatory chapels, dancing restrictions, and no laundry on Sundays. However, in comparison to other Christian institutions, Geneva is among the least restrictive: no dress code, lenient attendance policies, and no curfew. Like any good compromise, generally a few people on both sides are unhappy. Some find the policies too stifling; others call the policies too liberal. Many students, however, find the porridge just right—or at least, pretty close.

The goal of the community standards is to establish a moral tone for the campus, reflective of the College’s beliefs. The handbook reads, students "are expected to value one another to the point of sacrificing some personal freedom for the sake of others [and abiding] by prudential policies intended to limit behavior that may cause disunity within the Geneva community." Those whose tastes stretch beyond Geneva’s bounds are welcome to take their fun off campus. Campus policies are well-publicized—they don’t sneak up on you—and Geneva does enforce its policies, punishing most common offenses with fines, but focusing on redemptive discipline through community service or counseling. Few RAs are real sticklers; they’re more likely to warn you than write you up. The determined can always find ways to break rules and get away with it, of course, but the accomplishment garners little glory from other students and mostly annoyance.

Open Hours Policy

As a commuter, the campus strictness doesn't really affect me. However, the open hours policy makes it difficult to study with friends of the opposite sex. A lot of the people I study with are the opposite sex, so we have to go to the library or skye on limited hours to get some studying done.

Totalitarianism

Geneva is very strict when it comes to the rules they make and enforce. Many rules seem stupid to many including open hours, no laundry on Sunday, or the lights on in the room. However, these rules fall in line with the Reformed Presbyterian views the college was founded upon. But as with any school, there are ways to get around these rules.

You Have to Do That Really?

A lot of my friends go to schools that are not Christian schools, so when I tell them about open hours they are very confused. Open hours are when the opposite sex can come in the dorm other then the lounge. This happens 4 days a week from 5 hours to 12 hours on differnt days. It is not bad that we have open hours, but the rules are goofy. You have to have the door open and at least 3 lights on.
