Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Technology at Geneva is good and getting better, but it's not the best yet. Most classrooms are equipped with projectors, and Technology Services can solve nearly any computer problem you throw at them—though it’s prudent to keep after them if you want your computer back quickly. Computer labs are equipped with Windows 7, and while the library computers often fill up, spots are nearly always available in the Northwood or S&E (Science & Engineering Building) labs. Even so, it’s best to have a personal laptop because the labs close at 12 a.m., and computers are scarce during semester crunch times. It’s helpful to have a printer in your room (yours or your roommate's), as well. For large or complicated printing projects requiring color, binding, or special sizing, the nice folks in the duplicating center can do most things.

All residence halls and most campus buildings have wireless Internet with reasonable speed (Netflix and YouTube stream easily). The connection glitches on occasion, but it runs smoothly most of the time. Students are required to have up-to-date virus protection, enforced by Cisco Clean Access. Clean Access is the bane of Geneva students’ existence; it’s a hassle, it bogs down Internet speed, and it’s finicky. Not all anti-virus programs register, and occasionally if you update your approved anti-virus, Clean Access doesn’t recognize it. Clean Access does protect the campus network, and most of the time it runs smoothly, but when it does make a stink, it’s a hassle to fix. Tech Services is exploring other options.

Library Computers Crowded Almost All the Time

Most people have their own computers, but if you're on campus and you forgot to print something, your best bet is to go to one of the computer labs in Northwood or Science & Engineering. There is WiFi access all over campus and only in a few areas of the library (Reading Room, Reference Center, and group project area downstairs), but there is no WiFi in the desks of the main book stacks.

Fairly good availability of computers in the library, but they fill up fast. Many students seem not to know about several other computer labs on campus, which are routinely almost empty. Wireless has gotten upgraded, and the tech services department is able to provide fast and free fixes to most problems.

If You Need Something Fixed, Do It Yourself or Get It in ASAP

Tech Services can be on top of things, but you must be on top of them to get your computer fixed. Usually I try to figure out what the problem is and then I will try to fix things myself before going to them, because they take awhile to get your computer back to you. So, if I can't do anything about my computer I will identify the problem and tell them exactly what it is that needs help and they will do it with me standing there.
