Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

In 2009, the school renovated the stadium and installed a pedestrian walkway through campus, lined with maple trees and park benches. The old stone buildings and flowering trees make the campus look beautiful, and the wide open lawns (complete with tire swing) make it comfortable. That’s how Geneva’s facilities are: old and comfortable. Geneva lacks the resources to update every year, so you won’t find much that’s “state-of-the-art”—some of the paint peels in Old Main and the Student Center’s exterior is straight out of the '70s—but the laboratories and classrooms are modern, and the fieldhouse offers a full gymnasium and two racquetball courts for student use. The Fitness Center includes a cardio room with four treadmills, three stairsteppers, three bikes, two ellipticals, and a rower; an aerobics room with wall mirrors; and a weight room with cable machines and dumbbells up to 100 pounds. Be warned: it gets swamped between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.

Geneva does lack a good venue for the visual and performing arts. While the campus offers the Bagpiper Theatre and the Geneva Studio Theatre, both are small and rundown. Art classes are relegated to an obscure room in the basement of Old Main, with one half-hearted art display each semester. Overall, Geneva’s facilities aren’t flashy or state-of-the-art, but they’re lived in and comfortable, like a favorite pair of jeans—and they’re improving as fast as the College can manage. But students don’t feel like they’re missing out; the community and academics make up for the need of a fresh coat of paint.

Pretty but Much Room for Improvement

Campus is very beautiful and well maintained as far as walkways, flower beds, and the lawns. The buildings are generally well kept as well, although some of them are old and need serious work. The student center is nice on the inside but the exterior really needs work; it is a bit of an eyesore on campus. There is not a proper center for the performing arts. The students involved used the "left over" buildings that do have another purpose. The science and engineering labs also need greater organization and cleanliness to be at all effective.

Facilities Are Decent

The facilities on Geneva's campus are all right. Nothing that will wow you, but many things are provided for such a small school. The dorms need a little work, and the fitness center is small; but Geneva is also a small school that cannot afford to upgrade every year.

The Library Is Cool

I really like how our library has many different areas to study and do work. The computer area is nice because you can eat and also just relax where the desks in the stacks and the reading room are nice and quiet to study.

Facts

"Green" Initiatives

The GCSU (Geneva College Student Union) began its "Go Green" initiative in 2009. Its measures have included encouraging the use of "green cups" (washable cups and travel mugs) in lieu of styrofoam or other disposable containers, and removing trays from the cafeteria to reduce water usage and wasted food. Student response is mixed. Most want to see Geneva be a green campus, but few want to undergo the necessary changes. Some believe that the current green measures are baby steps that don't confront the broader problems, like inefficient buildings.

Favorite Things To Do

Students without cars like to watch movies, go to Sheetz, take walks in the neighborhood, hang out at BFCAT (Beaver Falls Coffee and Tea), work out, or go to the Underground for a widescreen TV, foosball, and other games. Students with a car can drive to Chippewa, Monaca, or Cranberry for movie theaters, restaurants, Beaver Valley Mall, shops, and of course, Wal-Mart. Student Activities and other campus groups also offer activities most Fridays. Popular events include Mystery Bus Trips, Dollar Date, Midnight Madness, the Big Bad Big Wheel Rally, Midnight Breakfast, Homecoming Weekend, and Pirates games.
