Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Guys and girls alike often come to Geneva looking for someone. This is good news if you’re looking, too, but at times, it's frustrating if you’re not. Most Geneva students are averagely attractive, with a generous handful of striking individuals from both genders and a sprinkling of true hotties. Most Geneva students, however, seek relationships based on inner beauty and a spiritual compatibility rather than first appearances. It’s not uncommon to see an attractive woman with an average-looking guy.

There are slightly more women than men, tipping the odds in that average-looking guy’s favor. The average guy (or girl) also gets help from the congeniality between genders. Mixed-gender groups and couples are all over campus—playing Frisbee on Memorial Lawn, eating at Alex’s, or crowded into a booth in the Brig. With all the intermingling can come sexual tension, but abstinence until marriage is a respected conviction, so the tension manifests itself in other ways, some better than others. At worst, high-school-style drama breaks out, but at best, genuine relationships form.

Adult Degree Completion Program

I am attending Geneva College at an off-site location. The program is an Adult Degree Completion Program, so the students are older than your typical college student. Some have jobs, some do not. Typically this program helps adult students to complete their education.

What kinds of relationships have you had since coming to school?

How would you rate the social scene on campus?

Facts

Social Scene

Geneva prides itself in its community and family atmosphere, and its boasts are largely justified. The campus exudes a relaxed familiarity. Guys and girls are friendly both across and within gender lines, and despite the small size of the school, everyone seems to find a niche. It’s common to walk across campus and recognize everyone you see by name and face. Many students seek relationships of various kinds—from casual flings to committed relationships—and can usually find them.

Hookups or Relationships?

Relationships are the main form of romantic involvement, with two variations: the first views dating and relationships as intentional steps toward marriage, and thus takes dating slow and seriously; the second views dating as more casual and fun, and these are the ones who get around and always seem to be in a relationship. Hookups do happen, but most often within a relationship. Most students seek a long-term relationship and avoid the hookup scene altogether.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

Class, Fitness Center, Library, or just walking around during "open hours" (the stringently-kept hours in which members of the opposite sex are allowed in your dorm room).

Dress Code

T-shirts and jeans are the staple of the Geneva student’s wardrobe. For girls, fitted V-neck tees and henleys are in vogue, usually accompanied by a coordinating jacket or cardigan to accommodate the fluctuating weather, and completed by flip-flops (at any time of year) and perhaps a decorative scarf. When the sun shows its face, sundresses and skirts sprout like May flowers. For the gents, T-shirts, hoodies, and polos are standard fare—and Steelers jerseys. Skinny jeans can be found on a smattering of girls and guys alike, but the trend hasn’t taken off yet. Many students frequent the Salvation Army thrift store downtown, as well.

Did You Know? Many relationships and even some marriages have grown out of Richard Noble's COM 101 class.
