Inside Scoop

Quick Stats

School Slang
  • "Ring by Spring" and "M.R.S. Degree": Two phrases used to describe the phenomenon in Christian colleges for students to get engaged or married by the spring of their senior year
  • Alex's and the Brig: Alexander Hall and the Brigadoon, the two dining areas on campus
  • BFCAT: Pronounced "biff-kat"; Beaver Falls Coffee and Tea Company, a much-loved coffee shop owned by Geneva alumni (also known as "The BFCAT")
  • Bittersweet Symphony: The most popular ice cream flavor at the self-scoop station in Alex's
  • The G: The large white "G" on the hillside behind the College, the site of many legendary pranks before the movable concrete blocks were replaced with a painted tarp; also a popular hiking destination for the adventurous
  • Geneva Bubble: The state of not being informed about the rest of the world because you are at Geneva, the division between the College and the local community
  • RP: Code for Reformed Presbyterian, denoting a branch of the Presbyterian denomination defined by exclusive a cappella Psalm-singing in worship; related acronyms: PCA, OPC, PCUSA
  • Stalker’s Guide: The student directory
  • Worldview: A keyword at Geneva, referring to one's system of beliefs and assumptions that affect how one views the world
  • Xander's: An alternate nickname for Alex's that never caught on
Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Best friends don’t always make the best roommates.
  • Don't go home on weekends. Make friends, watch movies, play Frisbee—but don't go home.
  • For the guys: Geneva girls appreciate chivalry.
  • Geneva posts really helpful checklists for each major, listing how many credits and what classes you need to take.
  • If you want a minor or to study abroad, start planning your courses around it early.
  • It is easier to start off strong and slack the last two years than to start off poorly and try to bring your grade up.
  • Some of the teachers are more interesting than the subjects.
  • The counselor's door is always open.
  • Time management is critical. Less class time means you have more outside work than in high school.
Tips to Succeed
  • Double-check everything your adviser tells you because it may not always be right.
  • For the best food, mix ingredients from the food stations in Alex's, like chicken-bacon-ranch pizza.
  • Get a meal plan with flex points. Also, if you like to cook, the 140 block plan will save you a little cash.
  • Go to your core classes with an open mind, and trust your professors have a reason for teaching you the material. You'll need that information in your future classes (and life), so pay attention.
  • If your rooming situation sucks, just move! A weekend of moving across campus is well worth avoiding misery.
  • Pay attention to The Cabinet (student newspaper) and get involved in campus issues.
  • Visit Career Development often to avoid unemployment after college.
  • Work hard in English 101 because it prepares you for all your future courses. Also utilize the Writing Center.

Very Little Thieving!

For some odd (and cool) reason, many people just leave valuable items out, and they get stolen so infrequently that most people would say it never happened!

Tightness of Student Body

Our school is very close with each other. I love the environment and the activities that are available to us on the weekends.

Facts

Traditions
  • Film Fest: A true red carpet event. Students dress sharp to attend a classy evening of student-made films and vote on their favorites. Many past films are available on YouTube.
  • Homecoming: Homecoming at Geneva is a grandiose affair, with food vendors, a street carnival, returning alumni, and of course a loud, proud football game.
  • Midnight Breakfast: This event takes place between 10 p.m. and 12 a.m. the night of Reading Day (the day before finals start). Breakfast food is served by the faculty.
  • Midnight Madness: The basketball season kicks off the Friday before Halloween. The event includes a campus-wide costume contest, a few student performances, dunking contests, and other games.
  • My Generation Night: MGN is the number one event of the year. Students audition skits, videos, cover songs—anything representative of their generation—and perform on stage. Past crowd favorites have been "I Believe in a Thing Called Love," "Don't Stop Believing [Glee]," and the Pokemon theme song. Check out past acts on YouTube!
Urban Legends
  • Adventurous students secretly climb to the bell tower of Old Main and sign their names.
  • There is a system of tunnels running under campus. Students used to use them to get off campus to go to bars, parties, and to sneak boys into the girls’ dorms.
Did You Know? Each student must attend 11 out of 14 chapel events per semester. Chapel is held in the fieldhouse every Wednesday at 10:10 a.m., featuring speakers from both within and outside the College.
