Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Geneva’s nightlife takes effort, and maybe a car and a little cash, but it can be found. Geneva is just 45 minutes from the great city of Pittsburgh, the best place around for flashy nightlife: clubs, concerts, pool halls, plays, and of course the Steelers, Penguins, and Pirates. The South Side and the Waterfront are very popular. Closer to home, students rave about the Back Door Tavern’s wings, and for a cheap drink, the Corner Tavern is right down the road. Western Pennsylvania isn’t known for its trendy nightlife; Beaver Falls is a blue-collar town with blue-collar bars, but if you want to hear bar-room philosophy at its best, talk to the guy drinking an Iron City next to you. Thursday nights are prime times because local bars often offer specials.

If the bar scene doesn’t fascinate you, there are literally hundreds of opportunities in Pittsburgh, but for the transportationally challenged, Applebee's and Eat'n Park see a lot of late-night traffic, along with the $5 theater and Sim’s Bowling Alley. A popular swing-dancing club meets Friday evenings just three blocks from campus, and Beaver Falls Coffee and Tea across the street from the dining hall draws a friendly crowd and hosts bands most weekends. The easiest and most frequent option is watching movies (the library has a large collection) or holding game nights and video game tournaments in the dorms or apartments. Despite the common complaint, there is almost always something to do—it just might take creativity and effort to find it.

Parties Are Off-Campus

If you're the party type, you have to be friends with the right people. If it happens on campus, it's kept EXTREMELY hush-hush because there are huge consequences if you get caught. Most partiers that I know have friends who live off-campus, and they party there. Pittsburgh is about 40 minutes away if you really wanted to find some nightlife. Other than that, there's not much around here.

What Do You Want to Do?

What do you want to do? Is often a question that is asked and the response is often, "It's Geneva; there is nothing to do." Which is true in some senses and not in others. I feel like when the college puts on events it's good, but truly there is nothing to do. This is due to me having mostly opposite sex friends so I can not hang out with them a lot. Also that all buildings close at 12 even on the weekends so this is nothing to do. I always hear, "Make your own fun," but when there is no place to go to other then the movies or out to eat its hard to. And in all honesty you can't go to the club or anything unless you are 21 so that cuts out half of the school.

Organization Parties

Because of Geneva’s dry campus policy, the amount of “party” in organized parties is limited, but that doesn’t stop Student Activities from trying hard. These parties usually center on a holiday or event, such as "Harvest of the Houses" for Halloween, "Midnight Breakfast" to kick off finals, and the "President’s Ball" for the College president's birthday. Clubs, societies, and other groups organize movie nights, poetry readings, and other socials, though these are often not well-attended.

Back Door Tavern

The Back Door Tavern is a much-loved local hot spot, known for its variety of beers, beer-battered fish, and enormous food portions. The tavern has a bar on the upper level and a full-size family-friendly restaurant on the bottom. The bar crowd is friendly, the service is good, and prices are outstanding. The Back Door also serves the only true Pittsburgh sandwiches in Beaver County. Fun fact one: on request, the bar keeps a record of the beers that you've tried. Once you've had 88, you get your name engraved on a plaque that covers two full walls of the tavern. Fun fact two: dubiously, the Back Door has been open since before Prohibition (1920).
