The student bus and also the metro system are fantastic. Just show your Mason ID card (don't forget it). On campus, you can walk anywhere. I've taken the metro to DC a couple times, no problem.
From google maps, seems like over an hour to DC with bus and then metro ride. Not going in everyday for an internship, but day trip to visit is fine.
The shuttle is free for students and takes you to various areas around Fairfax or to the Metro. Yes, it takes a little time to get downtown, but that's always the case because of traffic - even if you have a car.
It takes quite a bit of energy to get to DC about 40-45 minutes, sometimes even an hour depending on where in DC.
In the short term, yes; but in the long term the construction will finish and the campus will be all the better for it.
