GW is not a sports enthusiast’s dream come true. There is not much school spirit at GW, perhaps because the University has no football team. The main sport is men’s basketball, but games only get packed when the team is doing well. A lot of students are apathetic about other teams, including the talented women’s basketball team. Most non-varsity athletes do not attend games other than men’s basketball, if that. Intramural sports are popular and pretty casual. Club teams are more competitive—the GW teams travel to other universities to play. People involved in sports at these levels say they have a lot of fun in the mildly competitive atmosphere. GW tries to promote spirit among its students, but the efforts often fail. The women’s basketball team, which has a history of doing well, is basically ignored—almost no one attends games. Sports fans can attend outside games at the University of Maryland or watch one of several professional teams in the area. At GW, there are opportunities to play and watch sports, but if early morning tailgate parties before packed football games are what you crave, you better look elsewhere.

Sports . . . what? We have sports at GW, but it is a community that I am not a part of. I have never been to any games. and I like it that way. I know we have intramural sports, but my friends are too busy for those.

This isn't the school to come to if you're big on school spirit and the entire university coming out for a basketball game. When the basketball team is winning, there is more school spirit. As a rule of thumb, most students don't care about varsity sports.

GW is not a big sports school. The gym is usually more packed than the basketball games. Intramural sports are not so popular either. We do have several professional sports teams to watch, as well. Going to see the Wizards or Capitals is always fun. |

Sports are not a big thing by any means at GW. Our basketball team isn’t that good, but I enjoy going to games. Lots of people don’t show up, though. Besides basketball, we have a good crew team that competes with other schools in the area, and people enjoying watching the team. |

Gyms and Facilities
- Lerner Health and Wellness Center - One of GW’s newest and most aesthetically pleasing facilities, the Health and Wellness Center is where non-varsity athletes on Foggy Bottom work out. There is a spacious cardio room with bikes, elliptical machines, rowing machines, step machines, and treadmills. The weight room in the back is rather small, but it provides students with different free weight and weight machine options. Some students also enjoy the group fitness classes which cost about $60 per semester and include cycling, kickboxing, and step classes. “Hell Well” also has a pool, racquetball and squash courts, a smoothie and small meals restaurant, personal trainers for a fee, and massages for free, among other amenities. It is the best place to work out on campus.
- Mount Vernon Athletic Complex - Since Mount Vernon is located outside the city, it has plenty of space for outdoor athletic fields. The lacrosse, softball, soccer, and tennis teams call Mount Vernon home. The beautiful fields are perfect for team practices, and they provide GW students with the opportunity to watch outdoor sports nearby. In the summertime, students can use the outdoor Mount Vernon pool for free. GW also has some exercise equipment available on the Mount Vernon campus, so residents do not necessarily have to travel to Foggy Bottom to get in shape.
- The Smith Center - The Smith Center is a facility used primarily by varsity athletes. Older than Hell Well, the Smith Center offers fewer machines because it does not accommodate as many students. There is also a pool, and some one-credit fitness classes are held there.
