Quick Stats

Students Are Most Likely to Get Caught...
  • Drinking underage
  • Smoking marijuana in the dorms
  • Using a fake ID

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

GW’s policies on drugs and alcohol are very strict. University Police officers regularly patrol the dorms and respond to noise complaints. If violators are caught drinking, they pay a fine and attend an alcohol awareness class for the first two violations. The third time, students can be kicked out of on-campus housing. Getting caught drinking the first time or two is not the end of the world—it happens to many students. On the contrary, getting caught using drugs results in getting kicked out of housing and receiving no refund. In an attempt to encourage students to seek help for a peer in need of medical attention, the University offers an alcohol medical amnesty. Under this amnesty, a student who is taken to the hospital for alcohol poisoning will not have that incident included on any permanent records. Above all, it is best to be cautious when drinking and leave a party if it is getting too loud. Know that most upperclassman dorms, such as City and New halls, are not patrolled as regularly as Thurston or other freshman dorms.

GW seems twice as strict because of the strong Metropolitan Police presence at off-campus parties and at bars and clubs. If an officer catches an underager drinking or using a fake ID, he/she can expect to spend the night in jail. At most bars and clubs where MPD is not present, those with fake IDs are usually just rejected entry. Students going to parties and bars need to be smart. They should leave if a party is too loud and avoid using fake IDs at bars with a reputation for being strict or having an ID scanner.

Punishment

a police force can be pretty strict about underage drinking and drug use. First-time offenders get a letter sent home, and second- and third-time offenders are in danger of losing their housing. It’s pretty serious if you get caught, so my best advice is to do everything discreetly and not to be obnoxious about it. If you’re going to drink then drink, but don’t start advertising keg parties in your room. You will get busted!

Guilty Until Proven Innocent

The title says it all. If you end up with a judicial hearing you might as well not show up because they already have their minds made up. However, the dorms have almost no restrictions aside from what is local/federal law (i.e. no drugs or underage drinking) so that helps the strictness grade.

Kinda Harsh!

There is this thing called EMERGE where anyone can call in and tell them that a person needs to be taken to the hospital for drinking. It is a good idea but then people are taken to the hospital when there is no need to. It does not affect your grades unless you are EMERGED more than once and even then it depends on the circumstances.
