College Prowler Take
And the survey says, “Bring your own computer to school!” Although GW has several computer labs in convenient locations such as the Marvin Center and most dorms, the majority of students say they cannot live without their personal computers. Students must type all of their papers and assignments, which is easier to do from a dorm room than a crowded computer lab. Most students also want a computer for personal reasons. Everyone at GW is constantly on AOL Instant Messenger, which makes keeping in touch with friends convenient. Since all dorm rooms are capable of Ethernet connection, it makes sense to bring a computer to school. For those students who cannot bring a computer to school, GW’s labs, located all over campus, are adequate. However, the labs can get really crowded about a half an hour before classes begin, and it is almost impossible to get a computer during exam time. In May 2004, GW increased the printing fee from seven to nine cents per page in all University computer labs excluding those in residence halls, so it is wise to purchase a printer if you plan on printing a lot of documents. Although the University is trying to expand its wireless network, a complete classroom conversion will not happen for years, if ever. GW’s labs are just fine, but are often crowded, and computers sometimes break. That and the printing fee, which could increase even more in the future, make personal computers a worthwhile investment.

Students should definitely bring their own computers—getting a computer in the library is pretty difficult during weekdays. A large part of the campus is wireless, so I'd definitely recommend bringing one.

Everyone should have bring a laptop because there is only printing at main student locations, like the library. There is wireless in every dorm. If it is not working correctly, you are given an Ethernet cord at the beginning of the year. It's so much easier to keep in touch with family and friends if you have a laptop here.

Definitely bring your own computer. GWireless can be kind of a pain sometimes, but for the most part, it's pretty efficient. If you don't feel like dealing with GWireless, you can pick up a ResNet cable from the Student Technology Services, which is the plug-in Internet access option.

Most students own computers, and the school offers wireless access. That having been said, there are a number of 24-hour labs in buildings all over campus that usually have openings. I've never had trouble finding a place to go print something.

Did You Know? Each student receives an Ethernet (high-speed Internet connection) in his or her dorm room. The University continues to expand wireless access over all of campus, including in dorms, with the goal of providing a completely wireless campus. For students and alumni, GW recently upgraded its old Colonial Mail e-mail service to a GWMail service in cooperation with Google. GW students use e-mail in the same interface as Google Mail (Gmail), get over 6GB of storage space, and receive most of the same features as Gmail, including the Google chat, calendar, and documents features.
