Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The majority of GW’s student body is made up of white students from the East Coast; however, the University has a decent representation of students of different ethnicities, places of origin, and races. Washington, in general, attracts a diverse population. But while GW is a somewhat diverse campus, individual ethnic groups tend to stick together. Asian, black, Jewish, Arab, and Muslim students host cultural events to which the entire GW community is invited. However, the majority of attendees are usually students who are a part of the culture hosting the event, and students usually socialize with those of similar background.

Outside of cultural activities, students have the chance to meet people of other religions and races during class and at social events. International affairs courses attract an ethnically diverse group of interested students, as do certain other types of classes. Most fraternities and sororities are primarily white, but there are students of other backgrounds in the organizations. In addition, there are fraternities and sororities specifically for Asian, black, Latino, and Jewish students.

Not Bad

It's pretty good. A ton of international students add to the overall diversity of campus. A lot of American ethnic and racial minorities as well.

Kinda. Sorta. Not Really.

According to the GW Multicultural Student Services Center, 65% of the student body is white so the other 35% is comprised of international students and other minorities. While more or less diverse, the student body is more like a mixed salad than a melting pot.

GW is an expensive school so for the most part you won't find too much economic diversity, so a lot of the kids will be coming from wealthy, affluent suburbs. I'm pretty sure that GW doesn't give scholarships (or at least not many) to international students. GW boasts geographic diversity, but a big majority of kids are from the northeast.

GW is a big enough and diverse enough school that there is a place for everyone and if you need to find your own community you will.

Facts

Gay Pride

The student body is generally very open and friendly toward the gay community. The main student organization for gay advocacy, Allied in Pride, is very visible on campus. The University has also formed a small LGBT resource center for education, support, and advocacy for the gay community. Since there is an active and present gay population at GW, students are willing to accept and understand the gay community’s rights and interests.

Political Activity

Living in the nation’s capital inspires many GW students’ interest in the political process. Many come to GW with the hope of one day serving in political office on Capitol Hill or in the White House. GW is one of the most politically active universities in the country, and many of the students here are proud of that fact. Although the campus is by far composed primarily of politically liberal students, a small but tight group of politically conservative students also finds its place here.

Economic Status

Because it’s an expensive college, many GW students come from middle- to upper-class families. Although many students receive financial aid and are on work study programs, quite a lot of students complain about all the “rich kids” dressed in designer clothing and sunglasses who like to show off their money.

Most Common Religions

There is a relatively large Jewish population on GW’s campus, and a large presence of Jewish-related activities and Greek organizations. There are several Christian groups, which are generally not as vocal as the Jewish organizations but are still present. The Muslim community hosts several activities throughout the year, including forums on diversity and cultural events. Various other groups also host events and lectures concerning religion and culture. No single religion dominates campus, but there are plenty of opportunities to become involved with religious organizations or participate in religious events.

Minority Clubs on Campus

GW’s minority organizations are quite active on campus. Asian, Indian, and Middle Eastern religious organizations, among others, hold events and cultural celebrations throughout the year. Bhangra Blowout, organized by the South Asian Society, is a dance competition held in DC each year that attracts thousands of college students from across the country. There are also black, Asian, Latino, and Jewish fraternities and sororities that are active on campus. Other minority organizations such as Asian, black, Latino, Jewish, Christian and various other minority clubs also hold activities on campus.
