  • Baltimore Washington International Airport Take the Marc Train from Union Station to the BWI Rail Station and then take the free Super Shuttle to your terminal. The trip takes about 45 minutes total.
  • The Reagan National Airport is conveniently located just across the Potomac River and is accessible via metro or short taxi ride.
  • To get to the Washington Dulles International airport, take the Super Shuttle, a blue van that comes right to your door. GW students, staff, and alumni can find a discount code online that gets them a one-way trip for $27 for the first person and $8 for each subsequent person in the van.

Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

With a Metro stop and bus stops on campus, public transportation is convenient. It is also easy to use and will take students almost anywhere they want to go. The Metro, DC’s subway system, is easy to learn and cheap—a little more than a dollar will get you to most places in and around the District. The taxi system is convenient—many cab drivers park outside of Thurston Hall on party nights. The problem with cabs is that fares are based according to zones, rather than meters, so trips end up being quite expensive. Cab rides usually cost around $6 or $7, depending on time of day. Plus, riders are charged $1.50 for each additional person in the car.

Union Station provides Amtrak service to several major cities and is close to campus. Various companies in the city offer round-trip bus tickets from DC to New York City for as little as $36. Reagan National Airport is accessible via the blue line on the Metro, and GW usually offers shuttles to the Washington-Dulles airport for a reasonable price at the end of each semester. The Zipcar service, which offers students cars for under $10 per hour, is great for nighttime runs to the grocery store or day trips to local sites such as Old Town Alexandria or Baltimore. The bus system is a little tougher to figure out than the subway system, but it is still manageable. The city is relatively small, so even if a student gets on the wrong bus or train, it’s not impossible to find a way home.

Good Public Transportation

With a metro stop right on campus, multiple bus lines connecting GW to many parts of D.C. and Capital Bikeshare, GW has numerous options for transportation. Parking is severely limited, but the public transportation options make up for lack of spaces. GW could use some more bike racks but overall pretty easy to get around. The campus is also within walking distance of many DC businesses and going-out spots.

Its the city!

There's transportation everywhere. You can take the bus, the metro or a cab. For long distance locations you can go to the Reagan airport or go to Union Station and take a greyhound or megabus or amtrak.

Around the campus, you can take 4-ride if you don't feel safe or if you just don't feel like walking, especially in the rain

Awesome Transportation.

Yeah the vern express kinda sucks, but hey it's free! The metro is right there and you can literally walk everywhere. Biking is also pretty easy.
