Best Things

  • Georgetown draws an incredible array of prominent speakers and hosts fascinating events constantly.
  • Georgetown has brilliant students who are also socially adept.
  • Cherry tree season and the spring are breathtaking.
  • Hanging out on Healy lawn or the Esplanade
  • More best things . . .

Worst Things

  • The meal system at Georgetown is monopolistic, and the buffet-style food does not compensate for losing all unused meals at the end of the week.
  • Georgetown is in D.C., so it does not receive any funding from a state government. This, along with it being an elite private university, leads to a high tuition cost.
  • There is a wide variety in the types of dorms available, meaning some are far nicer than others and a clear inequity is present among the different living situations.
  • Georgetown has a smaller football stadium than most high schools, so the excitement surrounding America's favorite sport tends to be minimal.

Overall ExperienceWhat's This?

Georgetown students live the good life, situated right on the Potomac River in the flourishing capital of the nation. They have access to internships, a bevy of cultural opportunities, and a picturesque college town, all while receiving a fantastic education. The rare students who do not truly enjoy their experience are those who financially struggle to pay the incredibly high prices and don't take advantage of the resources around them. However, hopefully the recent emphasis on fundraising will allow for more financial aid to mitigate the disparity in wealth on campus. All in all, it is a very exciting time to be at Georgetown, as D.C. grows in international prominence and the University transitions from a regional Catholic university to an international research powerhouse.

The general culture of Georgetown can be summed up as passionate, pre-professional, and preppy. Georgetown students have a reason for choosing such a unique school. Specifically, Georgetown’s international emphasis draws students to the D.C. location over every other school from the Ivies to Stanford. Students are especially ambitious, and the school feeds their hunger with abundant opportunities and legitimate responsibility. Georgetown students independently run the largest student-run credit union and business in the nation. There is no Greek system, which means anything from the International Relations Club to the Corp can be a venue for social activity. The preppy polo culture is fed by excellent shopping around campus and M Street. Ultimately, like any other school, you will get out of Georgetown what you put into it. If you go to speaking events, attend class, and build a relationship with professors, the experience will be educational. If you want to go out on the town, shop on M Street, and root for an excellent basketball team, your time will be more of the "college experience." Georgetown provides the opportunity to forge your own path.

Diversity at Georgetown University

Variety of Color...But That's About It

So Georgetown has made this big deal about being an economically and ethnically diverse school, and it's apparent in the different types of people you see...but diversity basically stops there. People tend to have the same personality and fashion sense, so it makes an otherwise scenic and enjoyable stroll about campus boring.

Makes the City So Accessible

Georgetown has free shuttle buses to Dupont Circle (15 minute ride) and Arlington (15-20 minute ride), both of which have metro stations for an easy access to the rest of the city. There are other DC Circulator buses which come to the University at regular and frequent intervals if you feel like taking a straight shot into the heart of the city without worrying about transferring from the Georgetown University Transportation Shuttle (GUTS) bus to the metro. The DC Circulators are great for direct transport to farther destinations, and transferring between buses is fairly easy, but you have to pay per ride.

As far as taxis go, they're in abundance, but I wouldn't recommend them unless you feel like giving out a good portion of your paycheck to ride somewhere you could just take a bus or walk to.

Parking Is Awful

Being in a city, it is not surprising that the parking at Georgetown is pretty awful. Permits are required for street parking around the campus and on campus parking is limited to expensive lots for the Georgetown Hospital. Driving in general, however, is not a huge thing at Georgetown. I personally don't know anyone with a car here. And cars aren't really necessary with the public transportation and taxi system of D.C.
