Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Georgetown students are united in their desire to root for a nationally-respected basketball team, but students are also into lesser-known sports, such as soccer and lacrosse. A little-known fact is that the University’s most talented team is track and field. IM and club sports are growing quickly in popularity, though club sports leaders complain about a lack of funding, and IM participants bemoan the IM department’s relative lack of organization and manpower.

Despite its academic reputation, Georgetown is most definitely a jock school, but not in the sense that one might typically expect. Though club and IM sports are quite popular, the general fitness of the student body’s bodies can be attributed to the impromptu activities organized by the students. Hoyas are, as a rule, active people; working out at the on-campus gym has come to rival Catholicism as the most-practiced religion. Except for the basketball players, most varsity athletes are treated like humans rather than demi-gods, which allows Georgetown to avoid certain social poisons that plague other schools. Basically, the athletic environment has a grassroots flavor that is more populist and pick-up than professional.

Sports Are Big If You Want Them to Be

Sports are definitely a noticeable part of being a Hoya. However, the campus doesn't revolve around them. Basketball is HUGE at Georgetown and is the only sport the whole campus comes out to see. There's definitely a lot of hoya pride, but sports are not the priority of Georgetown.

BASKETBALL SPIRIT.

The majority of people here are really into basketball; people love to go downtown to the games to show their spirit and attend pep rallys. Hoya basketball can always be relied upon to start a conversation!

The Best

Our basketball team is awesome, our football team is mediocre, great lax, and successful other anonymous sports. Regardless of the event people will always get decked out in gtown gear and go to games.

Most Popular Sports

Men’s basketball is by far the most popular sport on campus. Most students purchase student tickets, and games become huge social outings throughout the winter months. The men’s lacrosse team is also pretty popular because of its success, but it is not as well-known as basketball.

Most Overlooked Teams

Crew is one of the most overlooked teams on campus. Its athletes make up a large number of students on campus, boasting three teams: men’s heavyweight, men’s lightweight, and women’s. The crew team is usually one of the highest-ranked teams in the nation, and races are enjoyable to watch when they use the Potomac.

School Spirit

Georgetown students are very proud of the Hoya tradition and of their school in general. They are diehard basketball fans, and some students even travel with the team, and they also work hard to support other sports teams. However, school spirit in general is very prevalent on campus—not only in sports games, but also in all facets of life. Georgetown students carry the Georgetown mentality with them wherever they go.

Getting Tickets

Tickets are only required for basketball games; all others are free for Georgetown students. Students are emailed by the Hoya Hoop Club before the season starts, asking whether they are interested in purchasing tickets. Tickets cost about $125 and include season tickets to all men’s and women’s home games. Tickets may also be purchased individually at the door, but most students go for season tickets.

Best Place to Take a Walk

The waterfront is a few blocks from campus and is the perfect place to take a date: dinner, a movie, and a romantic moon-lit walk by the Potomac. Also, taking a walk through the immediate area around Georgetown, one can find some of the most beautiful houses in D.C.

Did You Know? Georgetown is a Division I school in almost every sport.
