College Prowler Take

Georgetown students are united in their desire to root for a nationally-respected basketball team, but students are also into lesser-known sports, such as soccer and lacrosse. A little-known fact is that the University’s most talented team is track and field. IM and club sports are growing quickly in popularity, though club sports leaders complain about a lack of funding, and IM participants bemoan the IM department’s relative lack of organization and manpower.

Despite its academic reputation, Georgetown is most definitely a jock school, if not in the sense that one might typically expect. Though club and IM sports are quite popular, the general fitness of the student body’s bodies can be attributed to the impromptu activities organized by the students. Hoyas are, as a rule, active people; working out at the on-campus gym has come to rival Catholicism as the most-practiced religion. Except for the basketball players, most varsity athletes are treated like humans rather than demi-gods, which allows Georgetown to avoid certain social poisons that plague other schools. Basically, the athletic environment has a grass-roots flavor that is more populist and pick-up than professional.

Varsity sports are not that big at all, except for basketball. During most basketball seasons, the campus lives and breathes it. IM sports are more popular.

Varsity basketball is huge at...

Varsity basketball is huge at Georgetown. Most students buy season tickets, and going to games becomes a major social event. However, Georgetown definitely isn't the place for huge football fans or people who love to tailgate. Intramurals are really fun at Georgetown and are pretty casual since they are mostly student run. They're a great way to keep up with your favorite sports while still enjoying yourself.

Men’s basketball, men’s soccer,...

Men’s basketball, men’s soccer, men’s/women’s lacrosse, and men’s/women’s track are the biggest varsity sports on campus. However, Georgetown fans aren’t the best. There’s a core of serious soccer fans, serious lacrosse fans, and serious basketball fans, but most students are fair-weather fans. Football is a smaller sport, and basketball is played off campus, so it’s hard to rally the troops unless the team’s doing really well.

It’s difficult to say how big sports are, which probably means they’re not that big of a deal. The basketball team is always good, but they play somewhere else. Rowing is good. There are other good sports, too. I didn’t really follow them. People who want to be involved in IMs can, and they usually have a good time.

From what I’ve heard, about 55 percent of Georgetown students play IM sports. We have pretty much every traditional team sport, some individual sports like tennis, squash, ping pong, and swimming, plus some non-traditional stuff like floor hockey, volleyball, and ultimate Frisbee.

Getting Tickets

Tickets are only required for basketball games; all others are free for Georgetown students. Students are e-mailed by the Hoya Hoop Club before the season starts asking whether they are interested in purchasing tickets. Tickets cost about $125 and include season tickets to all men’s and women’s home games. Tickets may also be purchased individually at the door, but most students go for season tickets.

Most Popular Sports

Men’s basketball is by far the most popular sports on campus. Most students purchase student tickets, and games become huge social outings throughout the winter months. The men’s lacrosse team is also pretty popular because of their success, but it is not as well-known as basketball.

Most Overlooked Teams

Crew is one of the most overlooked teams on campus. It’s athletes make up a large number of students on campus, boasting three teams: men’s heavyweight, men’s lightweight, and women’s. The crew team is usually one of the highest-ranked teams in the nation, and races are enjoyable to watch when they use the Potomac.

Best Place to Take a Walk

The waterfront is a few blocks from campus and is the perfect place to take a date: dinner, a movie, and a romantic moon-lit walk by the Potomac. Also, taking a walk through the immediate area around Georgetown, one can find some of the most beautiful houses in DC.
