Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

For the most part, Georgetown students maintain an enlightened air of resignation when it comes to campus food: They don’t love it, but they have enough friends at other universities to know that what they’re getting is at least as good as the East Coast average. The cafeteria and meal-planning staff is grudgingly credited with doing the best that they probably can, given the circumstances—though students are often incredulous that, given the high price of Georgetown meal plans, the quality and variety of the food isn’t higher. All in all, the situation can be pretty plainly summarized: If your main dietary requirement has to do with quantity (e.g., guys), you’ll be fine. If you’re more interested in the subtleties of the palate (e.g., girls), you should think about purchasing a smaller meal plan and looking to feed yourself off campus whenever possible.

College dining, as has been suggested by any number of American movies, is never going to be anything to write home about. What’s largely overlooked, when it comes to the question of campus dining, is the important social function served by the cafeterias, one of which is planted firmly in the midst of the three freshman dorms. The easy accessibility of the dining halls (a three-minute walk from the freshman halls) is not to be overlooked—there are few more comforting first-year rituals than that of grabbing something to eat with some newfound or prospective friends.

Gets Old Quick

Leo's is bearable if you go in with an open mind and are willing to think outside the box to create something new, you can keep it from getting boring. It's easy to give into the off-campus temptations of Wisey's and SweetGreen, but they can add up quickly in cost. Bottom line, don't get a huge meal plan because you won't use it.

Repetitive

There's only one dining hall: Leo's. There are a ton of basic options (pizza, pasta, stir fry, wraps, sandwiches, soups, salads, cereal, breakfast/lunch/dinner diner food) but that's as complicated as it gets. Nothing is bad but nothing is super good either, except maybe the chicken fingers on thursdays and the french fries. You're required to have a meal plan freshman year and they're expensive, I have the 10 meal plan and living in Darnall (farthest from Leo's) I usually only use up to 8 a week. You have to get creative when making a meal. Easy to steal food to bring back to your room, grab and go option is okay (WAY healthier than all you can eat buffet at Leo's) but not worth the $10ish dollars youre paying per meal. There are block plans (such as 75 meals per semester) that are only supposed to be for upperclassmen but I plan on getting one anyways. You get relatively little flex dollars ($50 with the 10 meal plan) but there are a few Corp coffee shops that these become very useful at. Theres also a Subway thats always good and Vital Vittles is an impressive on campus grocery store. The epicurean is delicious but expensive, you'll end up paying around $8-$10 for a solid meal but its worth it if you are living in Darnall. Overall, not bad just expensive. As a freshmen, just explore all the options and discover if you really will be interested in a meal plan in future years.

Special Options With the hundreds of restaurants in the Georgetown area, students much prefer to go off campus and eat than to stay on campus. Another popular option is to stock up on pantry foods at Safeway and make your own dinner, especially if you live in an apartment that has a full kitchen. It’s a bit more difficult in typical dorms, but it can be done. Favorites are macaroni and cheese or plain pasta. Some students even cook their own steaks in the common room.
