College Prowler Take
There is a consensus among students that, if at all possible, you should bring a computer to campus. The labs (in dorms, the library, and some classroom buildings) get middling marks from users, who note that it can be hard to get a machine during midterms and finals. More than anything, the labs seem to be an added convenience to be used when you’ve got a few minutes between classes. They are not, that is, adequate substitutes for a computer brought from home. The best thing that can be said for the information technology systems at Georgetown is that every on-campus resident has access to a free Internet connection. Sadly, Internet connection often proves to be also the worst thing about Georgetown technology, as computer viruses have, in recent years, begun to swarm through campus computers like a meningitis infection raging through a dorm. The administration has been doing its best to combat these problems, providing free and easy-to-access software patches, but every semester, there are a few days when the network crashes completely, forcing students to communicate by phone or, in extreme circumstances, face-to-face conversation. The administration is fond of pointing out that most network crashes are due to students’ irresponsible computer behavior, but the fact remains: the technology at Georgetown is neither good nor bad. It’s just there.

The university as a whole is...
The university as a whole is moving away from library reserve books and toward electronic/pdf files. Plus, more and more classes have weekly bulletin board postings or paper submissions by e-mail, so a computer is a must. Wireless Internet is spotty around campus, so if you are going to buy a new laptop, make sure you invest in one with a good wireless card.

Yes, bring your own computer for the sake of convenience, but the labs are usually available—except during exam times, they can be pretty crowded. Ethernet (our Internet hookup) is fast and available, and it’s pretty much everywhere on campus; it’s in all the dorm rooms and apartments, all over the library, and in most lounges. |

There are several computer labs in each dorm; you can usually find one open, although it may be difficult at finals time. Everyone I know has their own computer; we all love to instant message. There are printers in the computer labs and library. |

You can’t survive college without your own computer. There are plenty of facilities, but when finals hit, they get pretty congested. The LAN connection will be your new best friend. |

Bring your own computer; everyone has one. However, if you can’t get one, the labs are never crowded (at least the ones I’ve been to), and Internet access is everywhere. A lot of professors use the Internet for class info, grades, and schedules. |
