Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Georgetown is a very cosmopolitan place, with students representing more than 100 countries and all 50 states of the union. So if you are aiming to meet a variety of people in college, Georgetown will definitely provide a nice avenue through which this can be done. The only issue is that although these people will be from a variety of geographic locations, they will, for the most part, represent a similar, middle- to upper-class, socioeconomic status. On top of that, there is a definite preponderance of Jersey/New York/California white kids from private Jesuit high schools. Georgetown has diversity for those looking, but as the adage goes, "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink"—so some students choose not to find that on campus.

One facet of Georgetown's diversity that is particularly unique is not the number of international students—as those students tend to segregate themselves among their own at most universities—but the number of internationally-minded people. Most of these students were born and raised in America, but their parents were not. This gives them awareness of the world and cultures outside of "the norm." Any number of languages can be heard while you walk through the halls, and nearly every student has been out of the country multiple times. To top it off, there are a number of fascinating "outliers" who you meet fairly frequently, from the granddaughter of the first Latvian president to the daughter of the last Shah.

Variety of Color...But That's About It

So Georgetown has made this big deal about being an economically and ethnically diverse school, and it's apparent in the different types of people you see...but diversity basically stops there. People tend to have the same personality and fashion sense, so it makes an otherwise scenic and enjoyable stroll about campus boring.

Lots of Caucasians, but Working on Improving Diversity

At Georgetown, one may find a bit of everything. We find students who come from many different countries, diverse religious backgrounds, sexual orientation, etc. On ethnic diversity, the school is still 70% Caucasian; however, there are groups of campus working on getting the interest from more students from minority groups. While everyone accepts each other and there is no sort of discrimination, there usually is segregation between groups. For instance, white kids mostly hang out with white kids and latino kids generally hang out with latino kids.

Diversity at Georgetown University

There is a good mix in diversity. The campus strives for tolerance--there is an emphasis on human values. There are students from other countries especially the mid east. There are courses offered in other religions. I think the campus is diverse.

Facts

Gay Pride

The campus is accepting of LGBTQ students, providing on-campus support groups such as LEAD (Leaders in Education About Diversity). This is done through the Center for Social Justice, an entire department dedicated to promoting diversity and tolerance. Georgetown has hired homosexual staff members to work through this center. Yet, the sizable gay community is relatively quiet.

Political Activity

Since Georgetown is located in Washington, D.C., it is a very politically active and vocal university. There are often demonstrations on recent issues in Red Square. Although it is a Catholic university, Georgetown’s campus is pretty liberal. Even the Jesuits often take a liberal stance, especially on social issues. Students take active roles in campaigns and notable politicians and political figures are on campus to speak seemingly weekly.

Economic Status

The economic background on campus is very mixed. However, being one of the most expensive schools in the country, Georgetown tends to draw a lot of students from wealthy families.

Most Common Religions

Since Georgetown is a Jesuit campus, the most prevalent religion on campus is Catholicism, but it is closely followed by other Christian religions. Georgetown also has strong contingencies of Jewish and Muslim students. It either offers services or provides students with ways to attend services for all religious preferences. If it doesn't, they will work to accommodate any expressed religious needs.

Minority Clubs on Campus

There are many minority clubs, from the African Society of Georgetown to the Taiwanese American Student Association.

Did You Know? Georgetown was the first ever university to hire a full-time Muslim chaplain.
