Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Most Georgetown students acknowledge that whatever the numbers might say, there is a definite preponderance of middle- and upper-class white kids from New Jersey. Nobody disputes Georgetown’s claim that over a hundred countries and all 50 states in the union are represented in the student body. Indeed, if your heart is set on meeting somebody from Montana or Madagascar, Georgetown will definitely be able to satisfy your curiosity. Problems might arise, however, when you go looking for that second or third person from Montana or Madagascar. Because they probably don’t exist.

The fact of the matter is that Georgetown is a very cosmopolitan, internationally-oriented school. If you come here and only interact with people who are like you, suprise, you will think that it is not a diverse place. It literally requires an act of will not to come in contact with people from different backgrounds. Of course, it is true that there are more heterogeneous student bodies at other universities in the U.S., but Georgetown is not, by any stretch of the imagination, a close-minded place. Like they say, you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink; the diversity of your Georgetown experience has more to do with you and your attitude than with anything else.

Diversity, but Not Enough

Many students are afraid to leave the georgetown neighborhood because once you get further out there are poor people and black people. However, there are many wealthy students from all over the world at Georgetown, so that provides some diversity.

More Self-Segregated Than It Should Be

On paper, Georgetown's diversity isn't that bad. In practice... people tend to hang out with their own race. Everyone's amicable, but I've never seen anything like it. It's definitely worse than it should be for a school of this reputation. There's also a huge gap between rich kids and those on financial aid... not a lot of middle ground.
