Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Most Hoyas characterize the Georgetown drug scene as low-key and underground. Whatever you want can certainly be found, but drug use does not bother those students who do not want to be bothered by it. Hard drugs almost never materialize at campus parties, though marijuana sometimes makes appearances at smaller-scale, intimate gatherings of friends. It is much more popular to smoke hookahs at parties than to smoke anything else, and hookahs are legal. Students agree that alcohol is about as common as it is at any other school.

Recently, the University started working toward changing its alcohol policy, which many student leaders have characterized as being draconian and unrealistic. Provisional changes were recently adopted that bring Georgetown’s rules and regulations more closely into line with those of other universities. The University also has a serious commitment to helping students with substance-abuse problems. An on-campus psychiatric and counseling center devotes a considerable portion of its energies toward encouraging students with alcohol and drug-dependency issues to seek help. In the end, a prospective Hoya needs only to know that aside from alcohol use, the drug scene at Georgetown is, in a word, tame. Binge drinking, however, is as popular here as it is anywhere in the country.

Not Many Druggies

There aren't a lot of blatant drug users at GU. Weed is around, but not prevalent, and hard drugs are pretty rare. Everyone drinks.
