  • GUGS: Georgetown University Grilling Society. They make one-of-a-kind, must-have burgers for which students like up for hours every Friday afternoon.
  • ICC : Bunn Intercultural Center (the big red building with the solar panels on it). It houses most history, language, and Philosophy classes.

  • NHS : School of Nursing and Health Studies

Things I Wish I Knew Before Coming To School
  • Don’t expect the football team to win more than three games per season.
  • Get on the smallest meal plan possible.
  • How hard the workload is.
  • How to manage my time better.
  • It’s not just a school for future presidents.
Tips to Succeed
  • Check your e-mail often.
  • Choose classes for the professor, not the content. The most boring class could turn out well with an engaging professor.
  • Don’t ever fall behind. In fact, start working ahead during those easy days at the beginning of each semester.
  • Get to know both your professors and your TAs. Take advantage of opportunities like office hours and dinners with professors.

Traditions
  • Jack the Bulldog : Jack is a live bulldog that lives full time on campus. He is cared for by one of the Jesuits, as well as a team of students trained as official walkers. Jack goes to all home men's basketball games and entertains the crowd by tearing into a box with the opposing team's logo. Jack also makes appearances at other campus events.
  • Singing the fight song : Georgetown students learn the fight song immediately. That is, they learn the song at accepted students’ weekend, before they have even committed to going to Georgetown. The fight song is sung everywhere—it is not only heard at sports games but also at formal events. First-years who attend the freshman retreat even sing it in a dark cave in the middle of a forest.
Urban Legends
  • A network of underground tunnels connects Copley Crypt with several of the other old buildings on campus.
  • Jack the Bulldog was originally adopted as a mascot due to the good luck he once brought to the Georgetown football team. According to rumor, the team won every game that season except for one; that is, they lost the one at which Jack was not present. The University had no choice but to hire him as a good luck charm.
  • The fifth floor of the Healy Building is no longer accessible because the exorcism on which Georgetown alumnus William Peter Blatty based his novel and screenplay, "The Exorcist," was performed there. Most often, the legend has the exorcism being performed by Fr. Thomas King, S.J. When asked whether there was any truth to the rumor that he had once performed an exorcism, he responded only, “Why, do you need one?”
