College Prowler Take

Georgetown students love their environment. During the day, Washington offers internships and employment opportunities that are literally not available anyplace else on earth. As long as you’re interested in government, journalism, or law, there will always be a place for you to get your feet wet. At night, DC is just as happy to cater to the needs of college students, with several neighborhoods around the town—including the one in which the University is situated—economically dependent on undergraduates’ need to cram themselves into bars and holler praise at the serendipity of life until the wee hours of the morning. Washington’s main weakness is that you’ve got to pay to play, and like any major metropolis, everything from toilet paper to lobster costs more than it probably should.

It’s often said that the neighborhood of Georgetown seems to have been designed with college students in mind, and that might be true, depending on one’s definition of “college student.” If a college student is someone who 1) has direct access to the bank account of a parent at the helm of a Fortune 500 company, or 2) is comfortable living in an elitist area whose adult residents are openly hostile towards students and do everything they can to make life miserable for the University
. . . then, golly, Georgetown surely was designed for college students. To be fair, Georgetown students have certainly done their part to drive up prices and irritate the neighbors, but it should be noted that if a “college student” is someone who will grudgingly walk the five blocks through a community of pale, snooty people who don’t smile, just to get to the cheap ($12 a plate) hamburger joint, then perhaps said “college student” should think about going to GW.

Washington is great for internships and nightlife. It’s not as wild as New York or Los Angeles, but there are tons of universities in the city and a strong nightlife. Students from all the local schools tend to hang out in the Georgetown neighborhood.

DC and the suburb of Georgetown are awesome. There are tons of landmarks to visit. As far as memorials, go to the FDR memorial, it’s amazing. There are also a lot of restaurants, shopping, performing arts (go to the Kennedy Center), and sports (rowing on the Potomac River).

Whatever interests you, DC is guaranteed to have. The best part about Georgetown is that it is close enough to the busy part of the city that activity is easy to find, yet Georgetown is its own private community that is very nice to retire to at the end of the day.

There is always hustle and bustle about DC. Since Washington is so diverse, you can literally go from a community outreach project, to the White House, to a concert or club, or a quiet bookstore.

There are a good many other universities in DC: George Washington, Catholic, Gallaudet (for hearing impaired), American, and a ton in northern Virginia. Georgetown’s pretty insular, but you can meet people from other schools if you get out in the city. People would probably say stay away from southeast, since it’s considered the dangerous part of the city. Definitely visit the museums, and pick up calendars of what’s going on at them. It’s fun to get out in the city and realize that there’s life outside Georgetown. Lots of people have internships that get them out in the city. Georgetown is very pre-professional.
