College Prowler Take
Hoyas are generous with their praise for the local club and bar scene. Every student has his or her favorite spot in Georgetown itself, but some of the most hallowed partying ground in the city lies a mile east, in the neighborhood of Adams Morgan, the closest thing DC has to its own Bourbon Street. Georgetown students report general satisfaction with the variety of bars and clubs, noting that there are nightspots to fit most any mood (unless you’re under 21, in which case the options become somewhat more limited). The only universal complaint is that it is expensive to go out anywhere in DC, but especially in Georgetown. Fortunately, on-campus parties are frequent and free.
Indeed it is true: if you like to drink in crowded public places, Georgetown might just be the school for you. Well over half of the freshman class arrives on campus with fake IDs, and most of the rest pick them up before October. Not that this is a fool-proof plan: everyone at Georgetown knows somebody who has had to spend the night in DC jail for getting caught with a fake. The best bars are those that are hardest on the fakes, so every student waits patiently as they slowly climb the ladder towards entrance at that strictest of bars: the Tombs. Younger students can expect to spend their years waiting for this day in crowded, hot, and sweaty bars along M street and in Adams Morgan. A final note—many Georgetown students don’t realize how lucky they are that nobody charges for house parties on campus; it’s a sort of unwritten rule that upperclassmen are expected to throw free parties for whoever wants to show up. The downside of this system is that campus parties are notoriously overcrowded.

Adams Morgan (another nearby area)...
Adams Morgan (another nearby area) has a few bars that are easier to get into; it’s usually about an $8-10 cab ride away. If you want to drink, you will always be able to find a party on campus to go to. Washington has a bunch of fun clubs to go to, as well. Platinum, 9:30 Club, and Modern are just a few I’ve been to; most of them have some type of college night, which is cool because girls get in for free. Modern is the only one within walking distance from campus. It’s kind of picky in terms of letting people in, but it’s probably been my favorite with the least sleazy people inside. |

Wednesday night $2 Corona and...
Wednesday night $2 Corona and Thursday night $2 Stella at Mr. Smiths on M Streets are a good bet before heading back toward campus and dancing to the '80s or '90s nights at Tombs. Enjoying beer and study snacks during Trivia night at Tombs is always a nice change of pace, too.

Once you turn 21, there are a host of bars and clubs in Georgetown. The Tombs is by far the most popular ‘Georgetown bar,’ and Rhino’s is a good bar, as well. There are a lot of restaurants on M Street that have bars in them, as well, and they are fun hangouts. Modern is a club that is fairly new on M Street. Adams Morgan and Dupont Circle—neighborhoods about 10 minutes away—are big bar and club areas. MCCXIII is a very popular 21-and-over club, as well as Platinum (18-and-over) and Nation (19-and-over). The 9:30 Club also hosts many live bands and acts from across the region and country. |

For freshman, the fake ID/bar route is disappearing fast. Chadwick’s and Rhino’s are the two so-called ‘freshman bars.’ If you go there frequently, expect to get your (fake) ID taken once or twice. |

There are a bunch of bars and clubs off campus that are nearby. Some of the more popular ones are Rhinos, and Chadwick’s. To be honest, how strict they are with fake IDs changes every year, but people always manage to find someplace to go that doesn’t ID or doesn’t card. There are some great clubs deeper into the city. You would have to take a cab there, but they are fun, and a lot of people from all over go. |

The nightclubs in DC are pretty good, and there’s something for everyone. Many clubs feature live music or entertainment and assorted drink specials. There are gay bars and themed clubs, and chances are good that whatever you’re looking to do, there’s a nightspot for you. The only disadvantage is that they are either a long walk or a short cab ride away from Georgetown. What follows is a non-exhaustive list of some local spots often frequented by Georgetown students
Bar Prowler
Georgetown students love bars. Fortunately, there’s a large selection nearby, and most can be afforded on a college student’s budget.
Organization Parties
Because Georgetown has no Greek life, the best parties are usually hosted by clubs or other organizations. The most notorious are the Jewish fraternity or the B-Frat, and the most fun are usually the IRC (International Relations Club) and SFS Fraternity.
Club Listings
Apex is known throughout DC as a gay club, but it welcomes people of all sexual preferences. It is an 18-and-older club and, therefore, draws a larger crowd than some of the other area clubs.
Epicurean is an on-campus restaurant and bar during the day but turns into a club during the weekends. Friday night it is 18 and over, while Saturday is 21 and over. Epicurean Darnall Hall (on campus) (202) 393-3555
Modern is an upscale 21-and-over club that features DJs who play different music depending on the theme for the night. They cover everything from hip-hop and reggae to pop. Modern 3287 M St. NW (202) 338-7027
The 9:30 club is both a night club and a music venue, featuring some of the biggest names in the music business, as well as up-and-coming local bands.
This is a club that features mostly hip-hop and rap music, and it sometimes hosts famous artists live. It features four floors and decks, VIP rooms, and a penthouse suite.
This is one of DC’s most premier nightclubs and is nearly impossible to enter. If you’re lucky enough to make it past the velvet rope, you’re in a classy and exclusive inner sanction that’s well worth the wait. MCCXIII 1223 Connecticut Ave. NW (202) 822-1800
Bar Listings
Chadwicks is both an eatery and a bar, but remember that its main function is a bar, and the quality of the food isn’t the best. Chadwick’s 5247 Wisconsin Ave. (202) 362-8040
Georgetown students’ favorite bar, The Tombs is one of the best food and bar options in the area. The Tombs is always busy, so be prepared to wait. And don’t expect a fake ID to work here—they are well aware of the college scene. The Tombs 1226 36th St. (202) 337-6668
Third Edition is a local hang out, especially during big sports games. On the weekends, its upstairs becomes a club scene, with a DJ spinning music. The main bar of Third Edition was featured in "St. Elmo’s Fire." Third Edition 1218 Wisconsin Ave. NW (202) 333-3700
This is the second most popular bar among Georgetown students, located close to campus on M Street. It has several flat screen TVs and fully supports the Hoyas on game day. Rhino Bar & Pumphouse 3295 M St. NW (202) 333-3450
What to Do if You're Not 21
Georgetown Billiards gives college students the chance to get away from it all any day or night of the week. It’s 18 and over with decent drink specials for your 21-and-over friends. Billiards gets put under the not-21 category because it is tough on fake IDs, but it’s still a good place to chill with friends and take in some good music. It’s not all hip hop either, but a decent mix of just about everything. Beware, though, Billiards can get expensive. Tables are charged by the hour, but may as well be charged by the minute the way they pinch pennies. All in all, a decent place any time. Georgetown Billiards 3251 Prospect St. (202) 965-7665
On- and off-campus parties are usually open to underclassmen students, providing mixed weekend entertainment.
The DC area has a lot of 18-and-over clubs, varying from live music to 80s-themed. They are easy to access via Metro and are a lot of fun for groups.
