Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Hoyas are generous with their praise for the local club and bar scene. Every student has his or her favorite spot in Georgetown itself, but some of the most hallowed partying grounds in the city lie a mile east, in the neighborhood of Adams Morgan, the closest thing D.C. has to its own Bourbon Street. Georgetown students report general satisfaction with the variety of bars and clubs, noting that there are night spots to fit most any mood (unless you’re under 21, in which case the options become somewhat more limited). The only universal complaint is that it is expensive to go out anywhere in D.C., but especially in Georgetown. Fortunately, on-campus parties are frequent and free. Indeed, it is true: If you like to drink in crowded public places, Georgetown might just be the school for you. It seems that more than half of the freshman class arrives on campus with fake IDs, and most of the rest pick them up before October. Not that this is a foolproof plan: Everyone at Georgetown knows somebody who has had to spend the night in D.C. jail for getting caught with a fake.

The best bars are those that are hardest on the fakes, so every student waits patiently to climb the ladder toward entrance at the strictest of bars: the Tombs. Younger students can expect to spend their years waiting for this day in crowded, hot, and sweaty bars along M Street and in Adams Morgan. A final note—many Georgetown students don’t realize how lucky they are that nobody charges for house parties on campus; it’s a sort of unwritten rule that upperclassmen are expected to throw free parties for whomever wants to show up. The downside of this system is that campus parties are notoriously overcrowded.

Good Nightlife Off Campus

It can get pretty crowded in bars around Georgetown. On campus parties aren't great.

DC Restrictions

It's hard to get into bars in DC, and penalties are very harsh if they catch you with a fake. There is usually a party to be found on any given weekend night. Be careful, though, as campus police patrol around looking for parties to break up, and off-campus neighbors are quick to complain about noise (DC does have a noise ordinance). But there's also lots of stuff to do if partying isn't your thing.

Facts

Club Crawler

The nightclubs in DC are pretty good, and there’s something for everyone. Many clubs feature live music or entertainment and assorted drink specials. There are gay bars and themed clubs, and chances are good that whatever you’re looking to do, there’s a nightspot for you. The only disadvantage is that they are either a long walk or a short cab ride away from Georgetown. What follows is a non-exhaustive list of some local spots often frequented by Georgetown students

Bar Prowler

Georgetown students love bars. Fortunately, there’s a large selection nearby, and most can be afforded on a college student’s budget.

Organization Parties

Because Georgetown has no Greek life, the best parties are usually hosted by clubs or other organizations. The most notorious groups are the Jewish fraternity or the B-Frat, and the most fun are usually thrown by IRC (International Relations Club).
