College Prowler Take

There are well over 100 restaurants within a 20-minute walk of campus, and you’d be hard-pressed to find many students who have bad things to say about more than two or three of them. In terms of price, speed, ethnicity, formality, and clientele, there exists a nearly indescribable variety of eateries. From the famed and beloved Tombs and Wisemiller’s, to the upscale Italian and French bistros on M street, the options are staggering. Little surprise that Hoyas report one of their favorite traditions is to go out to dinner on the dime with visiting parents whenever possible.

That said, it would impossible not to note the relative lack of cheap and quick sit-down food available near campus. College towns, usually famed for greasy-spoons and waffle houses, stand in stark contrast to the Georgetown environment. No doubt many students would say that this difference is a plus, but be advised: if you’re looking for diner-style comfort food, you won’t find it here. As is the case with most everything else in this most prestigious of DC neighborhoods, top-shelf is the name of the game. Head up Wisconsin Avenue towards Tenleytown or into the middle of the city if you’re looking for a spot to make your own eating-out headquarters.

Afternoon and late-night study...

Afternoon and late-night study snacks are a big hit with most Georgetown students. Epicurean (the new restaurant on campus) is getting quite the following for its made-to-order sandwiches and pay-by-the-ounce buffet. However, it will never compare to a sandwich from Wise's.

Although there are two restaurants...

Although there are two restaurants on campus, when students go out to a restaurant, they usually go to the Tombs, which is definitely a Georgetown tradition. It’s a basement-level bar/restaurant, and it is very casual and student-friendly. I ate there almost two or three times a week during the past semester. A cup of soup and a drink comes to just $5, a good quick lunch.

There are tons of restaurants nearby. M Street and Wisconsin are popular areas. There’s a lot of variety. The Tombs is a restaurant a block from campus and a great place to hang out with friends; a lot of upperclassmen drink there.

The restaurants off campus are excellent. There are good restaurants for every budget and taste, (especially my favorite: cheap food in huge portions). There is great diversity in the types of restaurants in the area.

There are plenty of good...

There are plenty of good restaurants in Georgetown in all price ranges. Just a few blocks down from Georgetown are two major avenues with shops and restaurants—Wisconsin Avenue and M Street. Wisconsin has more shops, and M Street has more restaurants. On M Street, there are things like Bistro Med, as well as a place called Clyde’s, which is really good. There are lots of other places you’ll hear about.
