College Prowler Take

Georgetown is a great university doing its best to become the Stanford of the East Coast—a non-Ivy that still gets the kids who got into Harvard. It has a long way to go. The academics are top-notch, but the school is still in the throes of transitioning from a regional Catholic university to a nationally-known research institution. In many cases, Georgetown’s reputation has begun to outstrip its resources; in almost every category except academics, you’re going to get better bang for your buck at a state school. Perhaps it seems silly to “discount” academics, but the truth is that they’re assigning the same books at Harvard and Yale as they are at Georgetown (and as they are at Ohio State). Whether or not you read them is up to you.

At the end of the day, it’s almost impossible to predict whether or not Georgetown is the right school for you. The best you can do is to think about your priorities and decide if they and the school intersect. Whatever you do, do not come to Georgetown simply because you didn’t get into Princeton, or Berkeley, or wherever else. There are far too many kids on the Hilltop who are there because it’s there, and not because they have any actual reasons for wanting to be there with it.

It’s been unbelievably great. I couldn’t think of a better place academically, socially, or in terms of any other city that I’d rather be in. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. To put it succinctly, I loved every minute of Georgetown. It is an outstanding school in an outstanding location, and the people are great.

Georgetown is fun, challenging, and exciting. We have world class professors—CNN is here all the time asking them for political advice—and we have really great guest speakers.

Last year, I adored Georgetown 100 percent; it really is a fabulous school, overall. This year, I’ve gotten kind of cynical in some ways because I’ve done a lot with Student Government, and the administration can be a pain to work with. There is a lot of red tape to get through if you want the school to change. I’m going away for a year this semester to study abroad and clear my head from Georgetown. Some of my friends at home have complained about ‘Sophomore Slump,’ where everyone can get kind of blah with the same old dining hall food, same professors, and same friends. I do love Georgetown, but I’m the type of person that needs a change every once and awhile to keep things in perspective. I have thought of transferring, but only to a school like Columbia because I would want the Ivy Degree.

I absolutely loved my four years there. I found the courses to be great, the student population to be diverse, and the extra curricular and social scene to be well rounded. There are so many different clubs on campus, which more than makes up for the lack of a Greek system.

The campus is in DC, so there’s access to great museums, clubs, and government-related organizations; the internships to be had are quite numerous.
