More Self-Segregated Than It Should Be

On paper, Georgetown's diversity isn't that bad. In practice... people tend to hang out with their own race. Everyone's amicable, but I've never seen anything like it. It's definitely worse than it should be for a school of this reputation. There's also a huge gap between rich kids and those on financial aid... not a lot of middle ground.

Don't Drink or Smoke

The police force is very strict about underage drinking. They despise!! drug use. Second- and third-time offenders are in danger of losing their housing, get a letter sent home, and are put on disciplinary probation. It’s pretty serious if you get caught, so my best advice is to do everything discreetly and not to be obnoxious about it. If you do get caught, expect the process to be long and drawn out.

I Don't Really Use the Labs but They're Available to All

Since most students have their own computers and you can print wirelessly, most of the computers are always free. Network speed is usually great but certain buildings still use HOYAS which isn't too reliable.

Freshman Dorms

Overall, the dorms here are pretty nice as long as you don't get stuck with Darnall. Harbin (social and you can become close with your clustermates, awkward room layouts but big), New South (newest, big rooms with awkward layout, social but not intimate), and VCW (own bathrooms but TINY rooms) are all close together and by Leo's (the only dining hall) so its kind of a "freshman social area" where you see/run into a lot of people. BEWARE OF DARNALL: in opposite corner of campus, 10-15 walk from Leo's, small/muggy rooms with little light, disgusting bathrooms, slow elevators, stairs up to lobby/RHO, separated from rest of freshman campus. Henle (sophomore/junior apartments) is in the same location and no one complains, but thats because your friends will be all over the place as well. It sucks being left our of the 3-dorm freshman cluster, and yeah you will become noticeably closer with your floor/dorm mates than everyone else but I dont think its worth it. And you mostly bond over the fact that your dorm sucks. If you have a horrible floor, you are forced to hang out with them. My best friends are in New South and no one ever wants to come over here, also walks on the way back down alleyways/by parking garages and the hospital are dangerous/scary and cold in the winter time. Housing is random so you don't really have a choice, but there's always the option of trying to switch out if you get Darnall (which I would definitely recommend)

Inspiring

The academics at Georgetown are unlike anywhere else. We have amazing professors (specifically the jesuits who have chosen to dedicate their lives to the art of teaching), fascinating seminars for freshman that are specific to their area of study, excellent major advisors, and unparalleled guest speakers. The academics are rigorous and challenging, but that is what you get at one of the most prestigious schools in the country.

Being an IB major at Georgetown University is incredible. Not only is the McDonough school of Business one of the top 10 undergraduate business programs in the country, but the location in Washington DC provides access to international economic resources that are unparalleled and cannot be found at any other University in the world.

50% Caucasian, Mix of Rest

You see lots of white kids on campus, sure, but there are lots of other races as well. There are so many clubs for diversity that you'd never have to make one. As for religious diversity, you have every possible kind. Economic: mostly rich kids, but personally, a lot of kids here are on financial aid and that's okay.

Expensive

Apartments are expensive. This is unsurprising considering it is the nation's capitals and one of the most soft after neighborhoods in the city. Most people live in Rosslyn or other DC areas for cheaper rent.

Well, It Is College

Most students are going to experiment with alcohol or even drugs during their four years of college. Alcohol is a visible presence on the weekends, especially if one is out partying at upperclassman apartments. But some Hoyas do not drink, and the peer pressure for drinking is nonexistent. In my experience, everyone seems to respect the decision of a student not to drink, and it is a personal decision. There are many other activities on campus that are alcohol-free if a student does not drink. Authorities (mainly, Residence Advisors) are pretty lenient/forgiving, but if you blatantly have alcohol in your possession, then you will get written up. Georgetown also has an on-campus, student-run EMT service that is always available in case of emergencies.

Very Diverse in Experiences and Opinions

Diversity is such a key part of the Georgetown experience. You are guaranteed to meet people from all different backgrounds and ideologies. Politics is a subject of notable interest on campus, and there have been many times when I have had discussions with friends about political issues. Every opinion is represented, and you will surely find someone who shares your ideas. Likewise, it is always interesting to converse with someone with different beliefs. This diversity truly molds your view of the world. Due to this diversity, acceptance into the Georgetown community is easy for anyone. However, there is a noticeable white, Catholic, wealthy population on campus- but these students are just as accepting (and intelligent) as everyone else.

You'll Never Be Bored

The Georgetown area is loaded with things to do for any person. If you're into history then the nearby monuments and memorials are just for you! The popular location, M Street is full of shops, cafes, and restaurants, and if that's not enough George Washington University is within walking distance, as well as the beautiful waterfront to the Potomac River.

Since my major is new to the BALS program at Georgetown, it has been an interesting experience. I was one of the very few students who declared this major when I first began here, so there weren't many class choices available to me then. As time has gone on, it is encouraging to see new students take declare this major and more course options available. Hoya Saxa!

Dining Hall Is Okay, Other Options Better.

Leo's (only dining hall) is alright, food kind of gets repetitive after a while, but new things present themselves if you have your eyes open, and it prompts very creative eaters. I prefer Epicurean because I'm a sushi addict, they have great sandwiches, and the people who work there are super nice. If you get tired of these two places, Cosi and Starbucks and the student coffee shops are really snug places to kick back and eat and even study.

Ihealth, SFS, DC and More!!!

Georgetown is one of two schools in the US that has an international health major for undergrads. "The department's curriculum blends public health and health systems management with an emphasis on the environment, culture, economics, and politics and their influence on health."

Georgetown is also known for it's School of Foreign Service (Bill Clinton graduated from it). It's pretty self explanatory. It's a sweet school with so many opportunities available.

Georgetown also has the largest presence of interns on Capital Hill (yes even more than Harvard). The networking opportunities are limitless and even if you are not interested in politics many national organizations have their headquarters in DC. Plus there is no other city like DC and if you're going to go to school then Georgetown is the best choice.

While Georgetown may not have the title of an Ivy League (we have been offered multiple times but have declined because we would have to give up our Jesuit identity/philosophy and Big East status) we have the academics to compete with the top and sports teams that could easily beat out any Ivy League school.

Model UN is huge here!!!! We host the largest high school conference in the nation, bringing in students from all over the nation and world. Our traveling time also consistently wins awards at multiple Model UN conferences beating out other top ranking universities.

Georgetown is seriously just the place to be. If you don't believe me, then come visit and let us prove it to you!

Hoya for Life

Georgetown has been a home away from home for me. I was originally fearful of culture shock (latina from Texas moving to the east coast), but I absolutely love it here. The academics can be challenging but the support system here enables you to do your best. "Cura Personalis" or "Care for the whole person" is part of their jesuit philosophy and it's definitely true. I would definitely say to take a class for the professor and not necessarily the subject (my favorite class first semester was Problem of God with Professor Sanders, who would've though!). I can't imagine being anywhere else! There is definitely something for everyone at gtown!

Metro, What Metro?

There is no metro stop close to Georgetown, unlike most city schools. To get to the nearest metro, you have to take the GUTS bus - a Georgetown operated shuttle - which isn't bad. Once you get to a metro, you can basically go anywhere in the city. Taxis are pricey but available. Don't expect to find parking anywhere on campus. In terms of long distance transportation, BoltBus, Megabus, and Amtrak are the way to go.

The lawns are perfect for playing football, catch, and frisbee. It's also a perfect place to get your suntan on; great for relaxation; and, when you find a shaded area, its awesome for studying.
