Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

If you choose to attend Georgia Tech, you can expect that the professors in any given course of study will be among the most recognized and respected names in their fields. Doctorates from Princeton, MIT, Stanford, CalTech, and Georgia Tech roam the halls, instructing the next generation’s leading scientists and engineers. Having come from demanding academic backgrounds themselves, Georgia Tech professors are notorious for being stingy with grades. With that said, the vast majority of these professors will do their best to accommodate unforeseen difficulties and problems, if they are informed. Most large classes are constructed with one professor that oversees several teaching assistants, or TAs. The professor is obligated to carry on the regular lectures and the general administration of the class, but each TA is given charge over a small subset of students. Most of the interaction that takes place in the course is experienced between the students and these TAs. TAs are generally very helpful, since they were also students not long ago.

More specifically, different fields of study usually beget different breeds of professors. Social science professors are generally much more supportive than math professors. Engineering professors always require a lot of homework and are usually difficult on tests and exams. Physics professors are known for being vicious. Computer science professors are usually very helpful and are always very knowledgeable, but their TAs are very strict and sometimes not helpful. Overall, you will be expected to learn things without supervision, and you will be held to very high standards.

Excellent Liberal Arts Program

I am proud of be a member of the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts at Georgia Tech. The college offers unique majors to students - such as Science, Technology and Culture (STAC) - that combine science and commerce to equip an individual for success in today's global community.

I major in Economics and International Affairs - a degree that combines my passion for foreign affairs as well as provides the practical, quantitative skills that make me marketable in the competitive job scene.

The curriculum is tailored to offer me a holistic education, including lab sciences and computer science courses, and as a result, I graduate with a unique Bachelors of Science degree. My degree requirements also include learning a modern language (I've chosen Arabic) and students are encouraged to study abroad in one or more of the multitude of campuses that Georgia Tech is affiliated with around the world. I plan to study in the Middle East this summer, to practice my Arabic skills, apply the knowledge I have acquired in my Foreign Policy classes, and enjoy the rich culture!

Job opportunities: with students as unique and ambitious as we are, employers welcome us with open arms!

Academics at Georgia Institute of Technology

Very rigorous academic curricula. Not for the weak-hearted. Many areas of special studies or research provided. Registration is pretty chaotic, but I wouldn't know how to do them another way. Professors are either hit or miss. Either they care all about there research and it's apparent that they would prefer to not be teaching, or they are very helpful and concerned about the progress and well being of the students. Very large workload. School=life here.

Good Professors

The professors, although sometimes preoccupied with research, are generally helpful and want to get their best students into internships and high places.
