Freshmen Required to Live on Campus

No - Most freshmen live on campus and do the Freshman Experience Program; however, some choose to live off campus and commute.

College Prowler Take

Dorms on campus are notoriously expensive, and accommodations leave something to be desired. Freshman dorms on East Campus are mostly small, two-person rooms about 12 feet by 14 feet in size. Sections of eight to ten rooms share a common bathroom with multiple open showers. The West Campus freshmen dorms are markedly nicer, but freshmen dorms all have common bathroom facilities.

On East Campus, the upperclassmen dorms of choice used to be Harris Hall and Fourth Street Apartments; however, with the Georgia Tech’s recent acquisition of the North Avenue Apartments, many upperclassmen opt to live there. Woodruff, a living center for upperclassmen, houses one bathroom with two showers between every pair of rooms. Sixth Street Apartments, Eighth Street Apartments and Hemphill Apartments all house apartments of varying size each with a kitchen, living area, and full bathrooms.

These are the nice freshman dorms: Harrison, which is all girls, Smith and Howell, which are all guys. The not-so-nice freshman dorms are Towers and Glenn, which are all male.

East Campus is more for the people who want to be closer to the city and the football stadiums. West Campus is more for the people who want some quiet and who like to work out since the CRC is by the West Campus dorms. The Greek houses are really in the middle, so that doesn't matter. To me, West is better because of the nicer dorms and more to do around you.

The on-campus apartments are very nice, but unless you are an athlete, you do not have access to them until your junior year. Dorms are small, but they can be a lot of fun, especially your freshman year. I’d suggest doing the Freshman Experience program, that way, you can live with people your age who are going through the same things as you.

The dorms are kind of small and not all that nice, but the girls’ dorms are in much better shape than the guys’ dorms. It takes getting used to using a public bathroom and sharing your rooms with someone for the entire year, especially for me, because my roommate almost never left the room. I would say to avoid Brown, simply because it is on North Avenue and not the safest dorm. One of the other East Campus dorms would be good, though.

The dorms are, well, dorms—nothing too extravagant, but they are lots of fun. They are located on East and West Campus. East Campus is where all the Greeks are and where the football stadium is; so during football season, East Campus is lots of fun. That’s also where most freshmen live because there are six huge dorms. West Campus is the nicer side of campus. It is where almost all of the upperclassman housing is, and there are not as many freshmen. There are five smaller dorms. If you are really into fitness and playing sports, I’d recommend West Campus because it’s by the athletic complex and the big turf field. If you’re a big football fan or party animal, or want to live with lots of freshmen, then East Campus would be more your thing.
