Inside Scoop at Georgia Institute of Technology

Georgia Tech has a very rigorous academic curriculum, tons of sports and intramural activities and facilities. The social scene is slacking, but existent if you find it. It's a lot easier to be involved in a social scene if you're in a sorority or fraternity, if not you have to be very extroverted to have any fun. This is not a regular school. You are going to work VERY hard and sacrifice a lot fun, but at the end of the day it's a very good balance of work and play if you can figure out a good schedule.

Facts

Traditions
  • The Freshman Cake Race : The Race is also a big homecoming tradition at G-Tech. Students participate in a running race, and the winners are awarded a cake baked by the wives of the faculty members.
  • Midnight Madness: During finals week, from 12 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. every night, students emerge from all over campus and scream.
  • The Mini 500 : The Mini is a tricycle race held around Peters Parking Deck, and it is a multi-lapped event. It is held the Friday before the Homecoming game.
  • The Ramblin’ Wreck Parade : Held the first Saturday of Homecoming weekend. Entries are in three categories: the contraption, the fixed-body, and the classic car.
  • RATS (Recently-Acquired Tech Students): The RATS has been a long-standing tradition with the University. Incoming students have RAT caps, and there are rules for the upkeep of the hats. Freshman cheers are also a part of this tradition. Upperclassmen settle for the freshmen to wear their caps during football games, rather than the entire quarter, as was done in the past.
  • Stealing the “T” : It is a common practice for the giant T that spells out Tech on the Tech Towers to be stolen during a semester. However, the penalty is high for those who do so and get caught.
