College Prowler Take
Georgia Tech has a good campus police force that patrols the campus extensively at night. Campus Police officers are just as competent as Atlanta City Police, and they have every intention of protecting the students. In addition to offering a good police force, Georgia Tech also offers a shuttle service that can take you to and from surrounding locations during the night hours. It is very convenient, and it can be reached 24 hours a day through an 800 number. With all of that said, one must still remember that Atlanta has routinely ranked among the most dangerous cities in the country over the last 20 years. Students should avoid traveling alone on foot during the evening and early morning hours, no matter if they are on campus or in the middle of downtown. The reality of the big city will not forgive any naiveté on your part. Get informed about city life, and use common sense, travel with friends, and stay in crowded areas.

You sometimes think there are too many cops. There are plenty of sidewalks for walking, there is sufficient lighting, and there are emergency call-boxes everywhere in case you need some kind of help. |

On-campus safety and security are pretty good. Off campus at night can be a little scary if you are walking alone, because you are in the middle of midtown Atlanta. The closer to the middle of campus you are, the better the security is. I lived in Smith, which is in the very corner of campus, and there are a lot of bums and people walking around on North Avenue. Two of my friends got mugged in front of our dorm when they were coming back one night. |

Security and safety on campus is not an issue, as long as you are smart. Keep in mind, you will be living in downtown Atlanta, so there will be some weird people lurking around at night. Don’t walk by yourself when it gets dark. There are several different options if you must get home late at night, including campus police escorts and a special night bus that will take you door to door. |

Security has not really been a problem for me. I never walk around campus at night by myself because it is right in downtown Atlanta, which isn’t always very safe. There are a lot of campus police, and you can also call a shuttle at Tech for free if you need a ride somewhere on or right around campus. |

I have to admit that the campus is in a major city, and certain things come with that, if you’ve never experienced a similar lifestyle. The campus really is safe, though. You see a campus cop drive by every two to ten minutes. Outside of the campus, the safety isn’t as tight, but I wouldn’t be alarmed. Honest. |
