Students either love or hate Germanna's Career Services—there really isn't any middle ground. The career counselors certainly won't take the time to seek out each of the College’s 8,000-plus students, so you must take the initiative and make an appointment to speak with a career counselor. For many students, this requires too much effort. The students who think Germanna's career counselors are wonderful tend to be the ones who plan to transfer to four-year universities or who already have jobs. The students who dislike Germanna's Career Services usually complain that community college students are typically grouped into two categories: those who already have jobs and those who plan to transfer to four-year universities, and that these stereotypes ignore the students who are unemployed and are attending Germanna in hopes of finding jobs.
Career counselors here try to help students map out the next few years of their career plans and to break the stereotypes associated with being community college students. The counselors take a personal interest in each student, and there are career fairs and workshops, which are great resources. Basically, Career Services here is like the College’s academics—they're good, not great, and students get as much out of them as they are willing to put in.
