College Prowler Take
Since Gettysburg is a residential college, living on campus is required for first-years, and strongly recommended for everyone else. The administration really had to make an effort to provide decent and varied housing for both first-year and upperclass students and, for the most part, they succeeded. There are numerous freshman dorms that are neither tremendously modern nor unconsciably dire. Upperclass housing has a number of different living options available. Single rooms are not hard to find, but it is also possible to live with as many as five other people in a suite if you so choose. The furniture provided in suite and apartment housing is basic and minimalist, and students will probably want to bring along their own furniture (computer chairs) to compliment what is provided. The school’s recent assimilation of local motels into its housing system has been a general success. Due to increasingly large incoming classes, traditional housing has been overloaded, resulting in the need to takeover nearby motels, which have been converted into student housing—usually suite-based double rooms. While farther off campus than most other housing, they are livable and provide a bit of a change from the dorm-building life that can permeate the early years of Gettysburg students.

The freshmen dorms in the West...
The freshmen dorms in the West Quad have smaller rooms, but they are a little more close-knit with definitely more of a family feel to them. The East Quad dorms are newer, bigger, and have more closet space. Some of them are air conditioned or have main kitchens. For upperclassmen, Quarry is a great option because the rooms are big, they are all singles, and you get a kitchenette and a living area with every five rooms. Also, each floor has a main kitchen and main seating area. The Apartments are pretty popular choices for sophomores, but I don't like them because they are very small and very far away from campus. Apple dorm is nice, but Musselman is not.

The freshman dorms at Gettysburg...
The freshman dorms at Gettysburg vary. Hanson and Huber have more spacious rooms with nicer closets but are located a little further from the dining hall and College Union Building, which are truly the heart of campus. Rice, Stine, and Paul have smaller rooms with one open closet that is shared between roommates. These three dorms also tend to smell a little worse than others. However, they are placed in a prime location.

Overall, Gettysburg has alot of great housing options. A lot of people give the older freshman dorms (Stine, Paul, and Patrick) a bad rap because the rooms can be pretty small and the buildings are old. I loved living in Stine, though. These three dorms are close to everything and are right in the heart of campus. The newer buildings, Patrick and Huber, are really nice, too. The rooms are great. As far as upperclassman housing, Ice House and Apple are awesome. Quarry is a little bit of a walk, but the apartments are really big. The only places I don't like are the converted motels like Lahm and Paxton. I feel like living there isolates you a little, but that's only me. Some people love it there.

The dorms here for freshmen are the nicest I have seen at any school. The upperclassmen have many options for housing, from apartment style to hotel style to actual two story townhouse-type housing that is on campus. There is actually no need to ever live off campus. |

Freshmen are really the only ones...
Freshmen are really the only ones who live in traditional dorms. There is a good freshman quad, which was recently redone which consists of Patrick, Hanson, Musselman, and Huber. The old dorms are Rice, Paul, and Stine. They’re pretty gross. Nobody wants to live there if they’ve seen what the other dorms are like. |

Did You Know? Campus cable TV is thought to consist of some of the most eclectic channels available, including such puzzling choices as the NASA channel, at least two different Japanese channels, German, French, Italian, Spanish and Czech channels, as well more conventional selections including BBC America and ESPN Classic. Students continue to clamor for HBO.
