Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Historically, the Gettysburg College student population has had a love/hate relationship with the campus network. When it works, everyone is generally happy. When it doesn’t, it usually occurs at a really bad time (i.e. finals week, mid-terms), and everyone falls into near-hysterics. To the school’s credit, the network over the past few years has never been down for any long periods of time, but the lack of reliability has undoubtedly caused many an extra sleepless night for students having to redo a paper or salvage a Web site.

Gettysburg has allowed students to purchase laptops through Dell at a slightly discounted rate for a few years. Starting in 2008, the laptop purchase program was expanded to include Lenovo and HP. Lightweight notebooks from different vendors are currently being considered for inclusion in the program. All computers purchased through the laptop purchase program include all options and accessories necessary to succeed in accessing both the wired and wireless network on campus. This sounds good in theory, but its effectiveness hinges on the reliability of the school network, which remains slow, restrictive, and failure-prone.

Full During High Traffic Times

There aren't a huge amount of computers because every student has their own but a lot of times they are full in the mornings when students need to print out papers right before class. They are also really full during finals week.

Really Good Services for Students Who Want to Use Their Computers

I would say the computers available on campus are all up to date. We have a few computer labs available for people typically in the computer science program to work on, but anyone can access them. We also have wireless internet on campus that can be reached everywhere. The schools IT programs is currently working on making this faster, but it already is pretty fast. If you don't want to use the wireless there is a cable to hook up to the internet directly. students receive these for free when they enroll. Most students have their own computer but not necessarily printer, because printing is free in the library.

Computers Are Fine

Just your average computes. They have lots of software and rosetta stone if you need it. Wireless seems to be working well now. Printing is easy and so is everything else.

Did You Know?

One of the running jokes on campus has to do with the student information resource known as CNAV. This Web site was originally envisioned as the homepage for every student, with access to transcripts, course info, carpooling services, pictures, and more. In reality, CNAV is good for just about one thing: C-stalking, a simple e-voyeurism raised to an art form. Every student on campus has their photograph, course schedule, phone number, and campus address listed. Along with anonymous access, this allows for just about anyone to get the info of anyone else. While a help when needing to get homework or the like from a classmate, C-stalking is generally considered to be no more than a guilty pleasure, but still the most useful service that CNAV currently provides.

Gettysburg was named one of the most wired colleges in the country several years ago by a national academic syndicate. G’burg now offers Wi-Fi coverage extending over a great majority of the campus, with plans to blanket the entire area in the near future.
