Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Plain and simple, Gettysburg College is not diverse. This is not, in any way, due to a intolerant campus or off-campus environment, but rather passive inhibitors, such as price and location. However, the all-white atmosphere is steadily changing, however. The school is making an active effort to introduce greater diversity on campus, with respect to both minority students from the U.S. and abroad.

As it is, Gettysburg is currently recognized in several publications for its student homogeneity. The “whiteness” of the school is especially telling during events such as commencement, where the fact that everyone looks the same isn’t just an issue of perception.

Better Than Most

There are options for everyone on campus regardless of race, ethnicity, status, religion, sexual orientation, and political views. Gettysburg has a good base of international students and a wide variety of students from all backgrounds. As long as you are there to learn you will find the college very accepting.

A Good Mix If You Open Your Eyes

Gettysburg is really good about openness and diversity. We are a huge campus for the LGBTQ community and if you have a problem with any of the various ethnicities or sexual orientations present at G-Burg, you better get over it fast. I have at least 2 or 3 people in every class that are not white. The economic backgrounds vary- I know people there on daddy's dollar and also those (like myself) who are there because the college pays for us to be. The college is a strange mix of Republicans with really left-wing views, but it makes for interesting conversation. The college is Lutheran affiliated and does have some strong religious clubs and programs for those interested, but it also has a lot of other religions and no one will force theirs on you.

Facts

Gay Pride

A strong and active campus chapter of ALLIES ensures that gay tolerance is quite high on campus. There have been no instances of hate crimes in recent history, and though small, the gay community seems to thrive at Gettysburg.

Political Activity

The student body, in contrast to the faculty, is remarkably conservative when compared to other schools. Political activity is generally kept to an apathetic minimum unless a current event causes feelings on one side or the other to bubble over. The College Republicans are more active than the College Democrats, though this is mostly due to higher Republican membership among the student body.

Economic Status

Students generally come from upper-middle to upper-class backgrounds; assessed by the fact that cars in the student lots are usually nicer than those in the faculty lots.

Most Common Religions

Mostly Lutheran and other Protestant religions, with a number of Catholic, Muslim, and Jewish representatives thrown in for good measure.

Minority Clubs on Campus

Though there is quite a low level of diversity at Gettysburg, there are several active minority organizations, including the Black Student Union, which hosts several popular events throughout the year.
