College Prowler Take

Your impression of the quality of Gettysburg facilities depends almost entirely on where you happen to be on campus. While some areas are recently renovated and are very clean and modern, other areas have yet to receive the same treatment and are quite unpleasant. The school has accepted so many students in the past few years that they have basically run out of conventional housing. The College has been scrambling to buy up local motels, which can be quickly converted into student living areas. Fortunately, the school has plans to renovate or improve most of the remaining areas on campus in the future. Athletic facilities, including the Bream-Wright-Hauser athletic complex, Musselman Stadium, and the soccer pitches are all nice enough, and a new athletic complex has been designed and construction has already begun.

Gettysburg is also renovating the historic Majestic Theater, which until a few years ago served as the town’s local cinema. The school bought it and engaged in a $12 million renovation that has expanded the lobby and adjoining facilities, and added a smaller theater in addition to the large screen for use in showing movies, lectures, concerts, plays, and other educational programs.

The facilities at Gettysburg...

The facilities at Gettysburg College are very nice. All of the academic buildings are open to study in whenever you want, which is nice because the library can get crowded. There are two different gyms, Bream and Plank. Bream is the athletic gym, and Plank can be used by anyone. This is nice because there is always room to workout whether you're an athlete or not. The College Union Building (CUB) is really nice, and parts of it were renovated a couple years ago, with a new coffee shop area serving Starbucks coffee, and it has many couches and tables to sit at. The Bullet, in the CUB, is a nice place to eat and hang out. It was also newly renovated. You can get hot food, coffee, subs, salads, and much more.

I'd say Gettysburg tries to make...

I'd say Gettysburg tries to make things nice for its students. The library has tons of resources and allows you to check things out from surrounding college libraries. The free hot chocolate after midnight gives you a much needed boost to make it through the rest of the night. The student center (called the CUB) is always active during lunchtime when kids stop in to check mail and clubs set up table to advertise events. The Junction, located in the CUB, is a room full of tables, comfy chairs and couches and some TVs. Kids go there to eat, study, or just hang out with friends. As far as sports go, the college is almost done building a big new athletics center, which I heard is going to have a bigger pool and a rock climbing wall.

The facilities are generally good, although sometimes they seem outdated. We are building a new $25 million gym and a few news dorms. The library is awesome and open 24 hours. The music building is always improving, the Science Center is very modern, and the Union building was recently renovated.

While some of the buildings may be older (that's part of the charm of going to a school that is almost 180 years old), the campus is absolutely beautiful and very well maintained!

What To Do on Campus

Due to its isolated location, GC is quite self-sufficient in terms of things to do on campus. There is almost always an activity provided by the Campus Activities Board on the weekend, and when there is not, there are always alternatives. If you have a few minutes to spare, the Bullet Hole is generally the place to go grab a bite to eat, and you inevitably stand a good chance of seeing someone you know.

Favorite Things To Do

Renting a free movie from the extensive DVD collection of Musselman Library is always a safe bet, and once a month or so, the CAB hosts a coffeehouse program that invites a poet or musician to perform in the Junction in a relaxed and open atmosphere.

Bowling on Campus

  • None

Movie Theater on Campus

  • Movies are also shown once a month in the CUB
  • The Majestic Theater

Bar on Campus

  • The Attic, the student-run nightclub

Coffeehouse on Campus

  • A Starbuck-like coffe court in the CUB
