Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Safety and Security is somewhat of a misnomer for those involved with Gettysburg College. Most of the time, it seems that they are concerned only with apprehending students for underage drinking and noise violations, rather than catching thieves and stopping violence. Perhaps it is a sign of their effectiveness at stopping crime before it starts that S&S has time to devote to these endeavors. Of course, I could say the same thing about the tiger repellent I use every day . . . Seriously, though, while Gettysburg is not totally devoid of crime, it is quite easy to avoid getting into situations where your life is in danger. As long as you take minor precautions, such as locking your bike or walking in groups at night, you are unlikely to fall prey to crime. S&S does do a good job of keeping students in line most of the time, and they do offer helpful programs like a 24-hour escort service. S&S is generally quick to respond, and often operates in conjunction with the borough police when crimes are reported around town.

Fire safety is taken quite seriously by S&S on campus. There is easy access to fire alarms in every dorm, and every room is monitored by a smoke detector. Fire drills are carried out at least twice a semester in each building. There are strict penalties for abusing the fire alarms, and smoking is prohibited indoors.

Nothing to Worry About

The Department of Public Safety (DPS) at Gettysburg College is there for you whether you find it convenient or not. They want to make sure you, as well as others on campus, are safe. DPS makes me feel like I don't need to worry about getting robbed, getting mugged, or worry about any other ugly instance in that area.

DPS

The Department of Public Safety works extremely hard to keep the campus a safe place. Gettysburg is a very safe town as is, but we do have many safety procedures that are enforced. We have a blue light system, where there are phones placed all over campus and if anyone feels uncomfortable you can pick up the phone and DPS will escort you home. Also there is an email alert system which notifies students if any suspicious activity goes on around campus.

Pretty Safe

Recently, the town has apparently gotten more violent. Most, if not all, criminal behavior reported around campus has to do with the members of the town. Walking around campus at night, I feel completely safe. It's well-lit and open and you can see people from far around. There are also many of the Blue Light kiosks where you can get help. DPS is also prepared to send out an escort your way if you ever feel that you'd need one. Common sense rules when you go off campus at night: go out with a group. The town is fine during the day, but can get a little bit sketchy at night. All bathrooms have posters with important numbers you can call in case anything happens, and the hospital is literally blocks away, so if anything bad does happen, you can get help quickly. I believe the campus does have therapy available for students, but I'm not entirely sure about that. I still don't understand the town police organization because it's normal to see Gettysburg Borough Police cars, Cumberland Township police cars, and Pennsylvania State Troopers cars driving around (in addition to the campus's DPS cars). The town police are ready to bust any parties they deem too noisy, as well, so watch out there. Lately, DPS has added more members to its team (as well as tasers), which may very well be just to increase the organization's intimidation factor.
