College Prowler Take

For the majority of Gettysburg students, experience with off-campus housing relates almost exclusively back to parties. Parties in off-campus houses tend to be a lot more relaxed because there is no threat of S&S breaking things up if it gets a bit loud. Of course, since only a relative few upperclassmen are allowed to live in off-campus housing, this exclusivity is much sought after, making parties at off-campus housing all the more popular. The houses themselves are generally well-kept, and there is an ample selection of apartments and houses within close distance to the college campus. The most popular locations are along Water Street, which is about a half-mile away from campus.

While off-campus housing is considered somewhat of a luxury, the College has made several on-campus housing locations “seem” like they are off campus, allowing upperclassmen the freedom of living away from the center of things with the security of being in campus housing and, unfortunately, subject to its security.

A good majority of the students...

A good majority of the students stay on campus all four years. If you want to live off campus, you have to have it planned out the beginning of sophomore year in order to find an open apartment for the next year. Students can only be off campus junior and senior years. The more coveted apartments right next to campus are difficult to get into because they tend to be 'passed down' from one group of people to the next. It's cheaper, but most don't seem bothered by just living on campus.

Off campus living is only for...

Off campus living is only for seniors and there´s an application process you have to go through and be approved before you can sign a lease. Not very many people do it. There may be like 15 or so houses that get leased. It´s definitely an option for students that want more independence their senior year. Most people just stick with on campus housing though.

Off-campus housing is pretty easy...

Off-campus housing is pretty easy to get depending on your year. For sophomores, you have to apply for a theme house, and there is a whole application and interviewing process that goes into that. It's all based on your GPA and class year, but it's pretty reasonable and fair.

There is a ton of housing options...

There is a ton of housing options after freshmen year, some being more "off campus" than others. While some kids do rent apartments near the college their senior year, there are lots of non-dorm style housing available because, frankly, the college owns half this town. Options include theme houses, motels and townhouses known as "college apartments."

Off-campus housing isn’t really worth it, since some of the housing options for sophomores and juniors are really nice. Getting a house isn’t really necessary. Plus, only seniors have the option of off-campus housing.
