Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

For the majority of Gettysburg students, experience with off-campus housing relates almost exclusively back to parties. Parties in off-campus houses tend to be a lot more relaxed because there is no threat of S&S breaking things up if it gets a bit loud. Of course, since only a relative few upperclassmen are allowed to live in off-campus housing, this exclusivity is much sought after, making parties at off-campus housing all the more popular. The houses themselves are generally well-kept, and there is an ample selection of apartments and houses within close distance to the college campus. The most popular locations are along Water Street, which is about a half-mile away from campus.

While off-campus housing is considered somewhat of a luxury, the College has made several on-campus housing locations “seem” like they are off campus, allowing upperclassmen the freedom of living away from the center of things with the security of being in campus housing and, unfortunately, subject to its security.

Commuting

Gettysburg is pretty bad about commuters- this counts as off-campus housing to them, but with a lot less benefits. Commuters are only allowed to park in the parking lot farthest away from the school, and it is the lot for service vehicles and unpaved. However, the school only charges you $20 for your parking permit rather than the usual $80. Teachers are really bad with commuters, and the amount of group projects and labs makes it difficult if you live more than 15 minutes away.

Theme Housing Anyone?

Most students live on campus, but theme-housing is popular. Join an existing theme house, like Peace House, or petition the college to create one of your own. The college is located on the side of the town, and the townspeople are used to college students renting apartments/houses, so they are not hard to find. All are within walking distance, parking may or may not sometimes be an issue.

Housing in Gettysburg

Gettysburg housing selection is pretty interesting. Of course for Freshmen living, there are atsandard dormitories, but once you are an upperclassman, you have the choice of living with whom you want. Many students battle for the best apartment complexes on campus, but that depends on your grades and what lottery number you are given. I believe that the lottery numbers are based on graduation dates. The dormitories and apartments are decent; it's all a matter of how lucky you are with your lottery number and grades.
