College Prowler Take

Safety and Security is somewhat of a misnomer for those involved with Gettysburg College. Most of the time, it seems that they are concerned only with apprehending students for underage drinking and noise violations, rather than catching thieves and stopping violence. Perhaps it is a sign of their effectiveness at stopping crime before it starts that S&S has time to devote to these endeavors. Of course, I could say the same thing about the tiger repellent I use every day . . . Seriously, though, while Gettysburg is not totally devoid of crime, it is quite easy to avoid getting into situations where your life is in danger. As long as you take minor precautions, such as locking your bike or walking in groups at night, you are unlikely to fall prey to crime. S&S does do a good job of keeping students in line most of the time, and they do offer helpful programs like a 24-hour escort service. S&S is generally quick to respond, and often operates in conjunction with the borough police when crimes are reported around town.

Fire safety is taken quite seriously by S&S on campus. There is easy access to fire alarms in every dorm, and every room is monitored by a smoke detector. Fire drills are carried out at least twice a semester in each building. There are strict penalties for abusing the fire alarms, and smoking is prohibited indoors.

Overall gettysburg is a very safe campus. There are always incidences here and there, but it's usally not caused by college students. I live on the first floor of my building and leave my windows open without any problems. All the girls on my floor leave their stuff in the bathroom, like hair straighteners, curling irons, etc., and no one takes them. You can leave your phone and key on a table in Servo to save a seat and no one will take it.

On campus is very safe, but there have been quite a lot of muggings right off campus. A lot of people go to Lincoln Diner at night, and the walk there is short but dangerous. Security is OK. People frequently get busted for drinking in the dorms. They are better about frat parties and won't stop you unless you are obviously wasted.

As much as this pains me to say it, Gettysburg isn't exactly safe after dark. If you stay on campus, everything is fine, but about once a month you hear of a college student getting mugged at the 7-11 or an off-campus apartment getting broken into. If you're going to wander around drunk, be smart about it.

DPS (public safety) is pretty on top of things. As long as I'm on campus, I've never felt unsafe no matter how late at night it is. There is a high presence of officers walking around on any given night to make sure things are alright, but not to the point that you feel smothered. As long as you aren't too loud or drinking out in the open, you shouldn't get caught for anything. There isn't much crime at all, but any reported almost always involves a townie (stealing or beating someone up). If you ever feel unsafe, though, DPS is only a call away, and they'll come pick you up or will walk with you wherever you are going.

Gettysburg’s campus is a relatively safe one; there is some bad stuff that happens, but if you are smart and walk home safely in groups, you should be safe. I occasionally walk around by myself at night, and I am still here. S&S is always available to escort any one home if the person so desires.
