College Prowler Take

Gettysburg weather is not quite the same as DC weather, not quite the same as Baltimore weather, and not quite the same as Harrisburg weather, either. The campus is located in a unique setting in the Mid-Atlantic Chesapeake Bay Watershed. It can get very hot and humid in the summer and equally cold in the winter. Precipitation levels tend to be high year round.

Gettysburg is susceptible to heavy snowstorms and strong thunderstorms. It is in a valley, which means that it is almost always windy, which helps cool things off in the summer, but means that the wind chill is bitter in the winter. Of course, this doesn’t preclude the possibility that it will remain 50 degrees and cloudy for weeks at a time—a state to which Gettysburg is prone, particularly in autumn and spring. Basically, all things considered, it is best to come to Gettysburg prepared for everything. Bring a raincoat, an umbrella, a winter coat, a light jacket, a wool hat, and sunglasses. You’ll probably use them all.

The weather here is very mild. In the summer, it’s very humid and hot, but it cools off in mid-September, and there’s normally a nice long fall. The winter usually doesn’t get super cold (my winter coat is a fleece), although there are occasionally fluke storms like this past winter when we had a huge ice storm. Usually, there’s no snow, though. And the spring is amazing.

You get all four seasons around here, but with a shorter spring and a longer, hotter summer. Bring all types of clothes, especially lighter sweaters and jackets for the fall and spring. Don’t forget your winter coats, hats, and the like because it does snow and get cold down here sometimes.

During the winters it never gets extremely cold. There will be several snow storms which may dump half a foot of snow, but then it always seems to warm up after, and most snow and ice is melted within a few days. Spring comes pretty early too; by mid-March people are outside soaking up sun and trying to get back the tans that were lost over the winter.
