Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Any student call tell you that basketball is the saving grace of Gonzaga athletics. The men’s team is consistently very good, games are raucous and electrifying, and students get in for free. True, they must wait in line for at least an hour or two on Sunday nights to ensure a ticket. If you want to be near the floor on gameday, you also have to line up outside the arena hours before the doors open. The wait is worth it: a front-row seat (not that you’d ever sit down) to Gonzaga basketball, with 2,000 rabid students decked out in red jostling and bellowing at your back. Students turn their backs in disdain as the other team is announced, then run on the court to form a human tunnel for Gonzaga players. Sadly, this passion does not extend itself to other varsity sports.

As for the intramurals, there’s an A, B, and C league, so you can pick your level of involvement and competition. There isn’t a huge variety of IM sports, but there’s enough to keep everyone happy. Essentially, the only ingredient missing from being a great athletic campus is a high-level football team (or any football team). There are T-shirts bearing “Gonzaga Football: Undefeated Since 1942,” but this is putting a good face on a bad situation. Still, there’s no way that a Thursday night basketball game against Portland State can compare to a football Saturday at Notre Dame.

The Kennel Club is unlike anything I have ever experienced! Attending men's basketball games is a must for any student here. Tent city is something you won't find anywhere else and students' passion for their basketball team is second to none! GO TO THE BASKETBALL GAMES!!!!

Basketball Is Priority

Basketball is Gonzaga's main sport. The school spirit and fan section are phenomenal. Games are really fun and exciting. Another fun sport to watch is baseball. The fans are always really supportive and energetic. However, there aren't any great fall sports so the beginning of the school year is not as thrilling.

Basketball at Gonzaga

One of the first things that come to mind about Gonzaga is our basketball program. Students get pretty excited about the basketball season and it's pretty contagious. The school spirit is awesome when it comes to basketball. One of the disappointing features about Gonzaga, however, is the lack of a football team. Basketball is great and all (during the fall), but it would be nice to see a little more diversity in the atgletic scene. When it comes down to basketball, I would definitely give an A+, but because of our lack of diversity in other sports, I give an overall grade of A-.

Most Popular Sports

Gonzaga men’s basketball is the sporting event, period. Not just for Gonzaga, but for all of Spokane. Women’s basketball is starting to garner more attention.

Most Overlooked Teams

Both the men’s and women’s crew teams are very good, but few students pay attention. Three Gonzaga men earned medals at the U.S. Rowing National Championship in 2005, while the women’s crew team is dominant in the WCC and competitive against the PAC-10. The women’s soccer program is top-25 caliber, and the baseball program has gained some glory as alum Jason Bay was named National League Rookie of the Year in 2004.

School Spirit

Gonzaga is not heavy on school spirit. GU students are fiercely loyal to the basketball team, but Gonzaga lacks any great rivalries. Some brave souls will engage in the body-paint-and-drool-and-scream activities that are the hallmark of diehard college sports fans, but the majority of fans prefer to cheer (and perhaps drink). Many students wear Gonzaga apparel and are reasonably proud of their school. However, very few are given to boasting about Gonzaga or dissing other universities. Gonzaga students recognize the flaws of their University, and are sometimes quite critical of them.

Getting Tickets

Men’s basketball is the only ticket that is at all difficult to obtain. Ticket distribution happens on Sunday nights, and usually requires an hour or two of waiting in line to guarantee a spot. Thankfully, in spite of high demand, stubs for the big game are still free to students. Women’s basketball is starting to gain bigger crowds, but never reaches capacity.
