Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Nearly everyone would agree that Gonzaga’s policy requiring all freshmen and most sophomores to live in dorms is good. They are the center of social life. If upperclassmen look back with fond nostalgia, it’s solely because of the friendships forged and times enjoyed, not the small rooms, grungy tiles and carpets, and communal showers. In one respect, it doesn’t really matter which dorm you live in—every dorm has discomforts, and you’ll probably build a strong circle of friends. But there are significant differences in atmosphere between dorms. If you fancy yourself a partier or socialite, live in a big dorm (C/M, DeSmet, Welch, Madonna). If you desire a small, tightly-knit community, try Campion, Alliance, or Lincoln. If having a pleasant, quiet living space is your top priority, go with Dillon or Goller. If you don’t particularly like people, Dooley or Chardin give you the anonymity you seek.

Because there is a lot of competition for good on-campus accommodations, it can be difficult to get the housing you desire. Thus, many students choose to get off campus as soon as possible. Once they’re out of the dorms, however, students realize how good dorm life was—free cable and heat, pre-furnished rooms, and friends a few feet away. While not priceless, the dorms have strong selling points.

Central but Distant

Living on campus allows for students to stay immersed in the social aspects of campus, stay central to the happenings, facilities and goings on but still get away to the comfort of their room and friends. Its a great experience for everybody!

Each Have Their Own Personality

The BEST freshman dorm is Catherine/Monica, even though the building is very old. The apartments and suite-style options are very new and well-kept. Each dorm building has its own reputation as well

Did You Know? The Kennedy Apartments were due to open for the 2006–07 school year, but suspected arson has delayed that until the fall 2007. Even though the apartments will be totally rebuilt, this will not have an impact on the number of incoming freshmen able to live on campus (but upperclassmen have to be relocated).
