Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Campus Security and RAs are generally a decent and benevolent lot. They’re almost always affable to helping students who have been locked out of their dorms or need a ride back to campus. Some students feel that Campus Security is sometimes incompetent in emergency situations, but they do try to help first and ask later (in alcohol-related injuries). The Spokane police patrol the periphery of the campus regularly, but do not interfere with students much. As long as you don’t get way out of hand, the powers that be tend to leave you alone.

Campus Security questions suspect behavior, and students holding keg cups or open containers on campus are probably going to get written up. In the past few years, the school has increased the fines and consequences—you can expect a $100 fine and a mandatory alcohol-awareness class. RAs run the gambit from careless to puritanical; Gonzaga and Spokane police will turn a blind eye to partying, then suddenly fine a house $2,500 for serving minors. Gonzaga preaches strictness, then practices it at random. Finally, be circumspect in downloading copyrighted material. Gonzaga will not punish you, but several times the feds have intervened in the student network and pursued individual students.

Campus Strictness

As long as you are not completely obvious and talking loud about illegal activities, RA's generally don't want to get you in trouble. If you are stupid about it you will get written up and have to go to an alcohol awareness class. Same goes with smoking weed. Police generally aren't very involved on campus, it's mostly campus security. They are only usually seen at parties when they get out of hand, but I have never heard of them punishing students.

Extremely Strict

Strict in terms of drug violations say hello to expulsion and if you are caught drinking be prepared to deal with the head of the RA's who are generally up tight and never listen and you have to pay for an alcohol class.

Fairly Strict

Lower division housing is dry. Residence staff is very in-touch with what happens in residence halls. If you want to drink in your room, keep it to a few people and keep the noise level down. Loud parties with more than a few people get busted almost immediately. Zero-tolerance policy for illegal drugs, and expulsion is possible, even for a first-time offender. Alcohol consequences much less severe, but you'll definitely regret getting caught ($50 fine, alcohol class, and letter sent to parents). Certain halls are easier to get caught than others. If you want to drink on weekends, go to C/M.
