Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Gonzaga’s dearth of Greek life is typical of Jesuit universities, which have traditionally tried to create an ethos antithetical to the hazing and binge drinking typically associated with Greek life. Gonzaga students seem to be content with that; the general impression being that this helps keep the number of alcohol-related deaths and sexual assaults in check. There are still plenty of house parties and student organizations. The Kennel Club serves the function of one giant intermittent fraternity that roars to life when men’s basketball is in full swing.

The two main service organizations on campus, the Knights and Setons, are only superficially similar to Greek life. They have initiations, rituals, and cliquishness, but no communal living (and only remain an official group for sophomore year). The Knights are noted for hosting the Grind and providing assistance and security at on-campus events, while the Setons wear yellow jackets and sell innumerable muffins for charity. Students attracted to themed communal living should take note of Gonzaga’s two newest dorms, Twohy and Marian, which attempt to bring together students with specific common interests.

There Is Literally No Greek System

Gonzaga does not have a Greek system. I am glad there isn't one. I think it would splinter our very tight knit community.

If college is incomplete without initiation rituals, have no fear—the Knights (service organization) have a week of initiation complete with funny outfits, heavy burdens, and feats of unpleasantness.
