Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Because of the climate and the Catholically-tinged atmosphere at the school, Gonzaga is not a major meat market. The first few weeks of school give freshman girls the chance to vie for the “shortest skirt” title, and buff guys like wandering shirtless when they get the chance. But Mother Nature puts a quick stop to such strutting—there is no beach anywhere nearby. Fashion plays a minimal role at Gonzaga; snobbishness and competition between or among the sexes is not particularly virulent. It’s far too relaxed a school to be into social discrimination. Girls outnumber guys, and they seem to feel more pressure to find a relationship before they graduate.

Freshman year is probably the time when the most students go crazy or behave promiscuously. Students are prohibited from being in the rooms of the opposite sex after 2 a.m., but this is a fairly insignificant obstacle. Freshmen are taken by the novelty of partying and skipping out on homework. However, the majority learn fairly quickly to prioritize studying over partying and relationships over hookups. The University tries to discourage promiscuity, and does not offer contraception.

Girls Are Good

Girls at Gonzaga are pretty sterotypical: Upper-middle-class, white, athletic, and intelligent. Very little diversity, but the overall attractiveness is high if you're into the type described above.

....Girls

Not bad, if you don't mind low diversity. There's quite a few caucasian females at this school, not much else. A lot of girls work out so....yeah, pretty slim and fit, tight, etc. haha

Can't say much about the guys.

The Zag Life

Gonzaga's campus is full of variety from student athletes to rocket scientists. They come in every size shape and color. The campus is very active and there is always something going on. Basketball, baseball and volleyball are just a few of the many sporting events you can attend and feel like a part of something while cheering on the Zags.

What kinds of relationships have you had since coming to school?

How would you rate the social scene on campus?

Facts

Social Scene

The social scene begins with the dorms freshman year. Mostly everyone finds friends in their immediate vicinity. Gonzaga students are generally outgoing, especially because there are very few well-defined cliques or niches. Groups that are recognized as cliquish (such as the Setons, the honors program, the theater crowd) are generally looked down on by the majority of students. Nevertheless, groups do form quickly, particularly within dorms. Because most students live on or right next to campus, interaction levels are high and the school feels small and friendly. Intramural sports are popular, as are house parties.

Hookups or Relationships?

A large number of Gonzaga students become involved in serious relationships with other Gonzaga students, but there are still plenty of people looking to hook up at parties or bars. Still, it often seems like students graduating without a serious attachment are an exception rather than a rule.

Best Places to Meet Guys/Girls

In a war, a good strategy can be to intercept the enemy at a point they have to cross. In a way, one can apply this same principle to meeting people at Gonzaga. All freshmen and most sophomores are required to have meal plans, so one should never underestimate the centrality of the COG in the social scene. (Thankfully, Sodexho has yet to find a way to bill students for friendships made in its territory.) Students can become acquainted in various on-campus settings: in class, at dorms, in organized activities. But sooner or later, it has to end up at the COG. Of course, parties are good places to mingle and meet new people as well. But if its going to last, you’re going to have to eat. Essentially, relationships at Gonzaga develop in the context of normal life: hanging out in the dorms, studying, and partaking in extracurriculars. If you’re looking for an abundance of flesh, go to a bar or a Kennel Club party. But if you’re looking for a relationship, just let friendships happen naturally as you become involved in campus life.

Dress Code

When the Spokane winter rears its ugly head, necessity takes precedence over fashion, and the parkas, ski jackets, and things made of wool come out in full force. But left to their own devices, Gonzaga students are only a moderately preppy bunch given to wearing Gap, not Dolce & Gabbana. Jeans and school sweatshirts are the garments most often on display, although September and April reveal plenty of spaghetti straps and board shorts on girls, and boys trying to perpetuate the myth that they're actually in Southern California.
