College Prowler Take
The Gonzaga campus is fairly quiet because it has almost no outside traffic. Surrounded by heavily student-populated neighborhoods, one rarely sees anyone on campus who isn’t a part of the University. Campus Security patrols around the clock, and there are many blue-light emergency phones around. Theft, bikes in particular, is the preeminent crime. Unless you have a sturdy U-lock for your bike, there’s a chance of being robbed blind when you turn your back. That being said, the dorms are always locked, and break-ins are rare. Off campus, students have to fend for themselves. Campus Security is not a major presence in the Logan neighborhood. The farther from campus, the more questionable the area. Another frequent complaint is that Campus Security/Student Life is woefully inadequate and insensitive in cases of sexual assault. The burden of proof is on the victim, and the alleged attackers are generally given the benefit of the doubt. Gonzaga seems hesitant to expel students—be it for sexual assault, violent behavior, or drug-related activities. But is Gonzaga markedly worse than any other university? Probably not. The bottom line is: be smart. Don’t walk alone late at night off campus (especially girls), and don’t expect your belongings to be safe from theft on campus either.

There is a very high level of security on and near campus. Security patrols are frequent, and there are never really any major disturbances. |

The security and safety seems great on campus. I never felt uncomfortable walking on campus late at night, even when I would practice in the Music Mansion until 3 a.m. Off campus is a different story, though. The Logan neighborhood is creepy, and people who are loaded or hopped up on meth can be unpredictable. But the city and the University are working really hard to create a renaissance in the area, so it should get better. |

While Campus Security sends out a periodical e-mails covering security awareness on campus, it’s far from comprehensive. Obviously, the fact that a large number of sex offenders live right in downtown Spokane is important to know, and it plays into the safety of the campus. I think, personally, that security could be responding to that more effectively on campus. |

I haven’t heard many complaints about it. We have emergency phones placed all around campus. You can use them if someone has an accident, I guess. Just like any college campus, there are going to be situations that can be dangerous but that you can avoid. Don’t walk alone at night, don’t go to parties with a bunch of people you don’t know, don’t drink too much, or do too many drugs. I see an ambulance pull into campus almost every week. Bad stuff does happen, and it is usually very avoidable if you make good choices. |

Both the Logan neighborhood and Centennial Trail can be sketchy at night. You would be well advised not to walk alone after dark. Muggings and assaults do happen sometimes. |
