Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The nightlife of Gonzaga is of a limited scope—it lacks in a variety of options, but tends to bring people together to have fun. The trifecta of bars adjacent to campus (Jack & Dan’s, the Bulldog, and the Star) are the most popular destination of the legal crowd. They don’t offer much in variety, but there’s absolutely no convenient way (barring a designated driver) of getting downtown. The big upside is that students find friends and familiar faces. This accentuates the small college feel of Gonzaga, and makes meeting up with people almost effortless. The club scene is underwhelming and not particularly popular. The local music scene has quite a bit going on in both rock and jazz, but not many students take advantage of it.

The under-21 crowd gravitates towards house parties because there is little going on downtown (for underagers) or on campus. Gonzaga is attempting to improve this by offering more on-campus events, but hasn’t had much luck in drawing students. Although the University or Spokane police don’t take proactive measures to discourage house parties, occasionally one will be slapped with a fine for serving minors. This doesn’t deter students from partying, though. If they wish to avoid the party scene, initiative is required to find their own activities.

Everything Is Possible

If you want to drink, downtown is a 15-minute walk to campus; if you don't like drinking there is the mall, the park, restaurants, lounges, and salsa clubs that are open. I go with a group of friends salsa dancing saturday nights. It's $5 to get in and they offer a free one-hour lesson. There is always something to do. Skyhigh is a 20-minute drive from campus. Two malls--one walking distance, the other 15-minutes away--are accessible. There is a field on campus, a pool, clubs, praise and worship/fellowship events, retreats...there is never a dull moment.

Good Friends Make for Good Nightlife

The nightlife is reflective of the size of the university. The more people you know the ore house parties you are invited to. There are no frats/sororities there only a few regular party groups (men's rowing, rugby and knights/setons). Other houses range from year to year, but party houses are often inherited. There ages below average clubs downtown for dancing. The local bars (jack &dans and the bulldog) feel like home to upper classmen.

What is the party scene like on campus?

What’s the best way to get to the popular nightlife spots?

Facts

Club Crawler

Spokane has slightly more of a club-life than a bowl of yogurt. The only thing approximating a club is the Big Easy (christened the Big Sleazy) and Dempsey’s (gay bar).

Bar Prowler

What Spokane lacks in clubs, it makes up for in bars. Nothing too ritzy here—if you want a martini or classy cocktail, go to a hotel bar or trendy restaurant. Sports bars, karaoke bars, bars with microbrews, sleazy bars, Spokane offers them all. By far, the most popular with Gonzaga students are the three adjacent to campus: Jack & Dan’s, the Bulldog, and the Star. If you venture downtown, you’ll find a different, more Spokane scene.

Organization Parties

The Kennel Club is the pre-eminent party organization at Gonzaga. Virtually every home basketball game is followed by a multiple keg, 500-person shindig. Admittance is free if you’re a member of the Kennel Club (which entails paying a $35 fee for T-shirt and bottle opener at the beginning of the basketball season). Other than that, most parties are never directly or officially connected to organizations. This is probably largely due to Gonzaga’s tumultuous relationship with the booze. Sure, there will be crew parties or rugby parties, but these are of a loosely extracurricular nature.

Dempsey’s Brass Rail

Opened in 1989, Dempsey’s is Spokane’s only club oriented towards the gay crowd. It’s gained a reputation as one of the better dance places around, as it usually has a big crowd and stays open until 4 a.m. on the weekends. You can hit the dance floor upstairs, or enjoy the pool tables and lounge on the street level.

Star Restaurant & Lounge (The Star)

Gonzaga students have a love/hate relationship with this dark and seedy restaurant. They’re suspicious of the mullet-sporting Spokanites who frequent it, but are drawn to its unabashed sleaziness and karaoke. The Star used to be the only bar in the “Gonzaga Triangle” to serve hard liquor, but that competitive advantage has vanished as both Jack & Dan’s and the Bulldog added liquor in 2004.

The Viking

The Viking is seemingly in the middle of nowhere—a glorified aluminum-siding shed. Still, Gonzaga students are willing to hunt it down because of its fantastic selection of beers (26 on tap), its Free Pint Glass Wednesdays and $5 Pitcher Thursdays. The crowd varies from quiet elderly couples to hair-metal screamers, depending on the night.

Jack & Dan’s Tavern

Jack & Dan’s is nothing short of the pride of Spokane. It was named the sixth best sports bar by Sports Illustrated. Much has to do with the fact that it’s owned and operated by Jack Stockton, father of NBA Hall of Fame point guard John Stockton. It has pool tables, an award-winning lunch menu, and family seating. However, it still feels cozy when half of Gonzaga is packed into it on a weekend or game night.

The Bulldog

The Bulldog is second to Jack & Dan’s in student popularity, and has a more noisy, smoky, dive-bar feel. It is very much geared toward Gonzaga students, offering pool tables and free popcorn. Wednesday night is College Pint Night, with mediocre specials on various pints of beer.

Fast Eddie’s

Fast Eddie’s is perhaps the most popular downtown bar, drawing a big crowd of locals, seemingly around the clock. It advertises “Lousy Food, High Prices, Warm Beer!” and offers a strange mix of big-bar glitz with trashy-bar vibe. It’s a must-visit for every Gonzaga student on birthdays—you can “Spin the Wheel” for a chance to win up to $100 in drinks.

What to Do if You're Not 21What's This?

Lindaman’s Restaurant

Lindaman’s has it all: bistro-style restaurant, coffeeshop, and bar. With spacious indoor and patio seating, it’s the perfect place to bring a laptop and spend time studying off campus.

Rockwood Bakery

The Rockwood Bakery is definitely the finest coffeeshop in town to pass an afternoon. It has a spacious yet homey interior, replete with couches and comfy chairs. It’s also only a block from Manito Park, so if the weather is good, you can get your coffee or lunch to go.

The Big Easy

As previously listed, 18 and over can get into College Night with a valid student ID. This is the only club option available for the under-21 crowd, though.

Liberty Café

The Liberty Café is open until 9 p.m. nightly, nestled as it is inside Auntie’s Bookstore—unquestionably the coolest (and biggest) bookstore downtown.
