Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

If you aren’t used to receiving personal attention from teachers, Goucher professors may startle you at first. The professors are very accessible and participate in all aspects of the campus. You may see them in the dining halls, at athletic games, and even at late-night events. They have office hours each week where students can stop by to ask questions about class, get feedback on assignments, or just chat about life in general. Smaller classes also mean that there are no teaching assistants, so you will be in direct contact with professors, and they will be the sole graders of your work. Among Goucher’s faculty are popular authors, renowned dancers and musicians, experienced journalists, and highly respected psychologists. While some are a little eccentric, the knowledge and experience they bring to class is invaluable.

Overall, classes at Goucher are excellent. If you are unsure of your major, complete the general education requirements first—it will give you a taste of each department. While you need to complete a major to graduate, it is often better to think of what career you would like to pursue and then take classes that pertain to that, even if they are not within your major. Many students pursue double majors or an interdisciplinary major, both of which are not as difficult as they sound, as long as you decide on a game plan by sophomore year.

Challenging Opportunities

The academics are excellent and the professors are great! I've only had one poor professor, but that is truly a rarity at Goucher. They all challenge us and make it interesting and fun at the same time. Also, because it is a small school, research opportunities from undergrads are available!

Great Peace Program

I'm at Goucher College, and I'm a Peace Studies/English (Writing Concentration) major. All of my professors have been insightful and availible for extra help. The Peace professors seem to be aware that it's a major often lacking in percieved legitimacy, so to compensate, all of them teach extremely challenging courses.

Solid Academics

I love the professors at Goucher! They meet with you one-on-one and really take the time to get to know you. Workload is manageable, although it can get pretty tough at some points. And the study abroad option is pretty much what everyone looks forward to.

Did You Know?

Not happy with the majors Goucher provides? You can create your own! With an individualized interdisciplinary major, you select courses from three or more departments that are relevant to your interest. For example, if you want to major in social justice, you may select courses in the peace studies, political science, and sociology departments to compliment this discipline.

If you elect to audit a course, you are not required to complete the outside coursework, and you do not receive a grade. You simply attend and participate in the class, minus the stress!

Students can take undergraduate courses outside of their major as long as they meet the course’s prerequisites or receive permission from the professor.

If Goucher does not offer a specific course you desire, you may take the course at another local college without paying additional tuition. Participating colleges include Baltimore Hebrew University, Coppin State College, Johns Hopkins University, Loyola College, Maryland Institution College of Art, Morgan State University, College of Notre Dame of Maryland, Peabody Institute, Towson University, University of Baltimore, University of Maryland Baltimore County, and Villa Julie College. However, this option is only available once a semester, after your first semester of freshman year, and before your final semester.
