Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

The majority of Goucher students would rather read a psychology textbook than go to an athletic event on campus. The only thing students watch the sport teams do is try to fit 30 people at two small tables in the dining hall. While the student body is apathetic toward sports, the athletes love it and have a guaranteed social circle. The teams form strong bonds, and they play together, eat together, go to class together, study together, and party together. Students who do attend sporting events are usually friends and family of the players; however, the men’s soccer, lacrosse, and basketball teams receive a decent amount of student support. Midnight Madness, the annual pep rally held the night before the basketball season starts, is one of the most widely attended campus events.

Club sports are relatively popular on campus, especially ultimate Frisbee and disc golf, which compete regularly with other colleges. Intramural sports have been expanded over the past couple of years and include regular seasons of soccer and basketball, with other sports rotating based upon student interest. Since Goucher sports are Division III, getting a spot on the team is not as competitive as other colleges, and some teams don’t make any cuts at all.

The Arts Are More Important

I can't complain. that is why I came here. NO FOOTBALL TEAM! If we got one, I might actually consider leaving, and that is a huge statement to make because I am absolutely in love with Goucher. I give it an A+ because I think sports have their appropriate place. you can participate in them if you want to but if you don't want to you don't have to. I don't share the frustration athletes do here because I am an avid supporter of the arts. Yes, I might show up to a game, but I won't enjoy it as much. I will go the opera, or a play, or a concert in the GoHo. That is why I came here, because that is what I enjoy. Anyone here for athletics knew what it would be like, we are not a big sports school. I don't condemn them or thinks sports are useless, I used to be an athlete myself. I think it's valuable, I know we need them on campus, I know I should probably support them more. Sports just aren't my thing. I'm here to be myself, be with the arts. I respect athletes. I wish they didn't seem so isolated from everyone else. My friends who are athletes I rarely see and I wish I saw them more. I think Goucher has a unique identity. I think we stay true to that in the way we see students go for what they love, there are just more students here who consider the Arts to be more important and that is OK

Sports?

As a D3 school, students are here for academics more than sports. Our teams are pretty average, there are a couple good ones but not very many people go to games, at least not on a regular basis.

Dance and Horsebackriding :)

Sports at Goucher are pretty terrible... Good for the people who want to concentrate on a tough major and still get to play their sport on a college level, but really sometimes I think that there should be a division 4 just for Goucher. The horseback riding team does very well in their competitive division however and our dance program is one of the top non-conservatory programs in the country. Sometimes students only go to sporting events to watch dance team perform at halftime. We don't even have a football team.

Most Popular Sports

Sports, in general, are not popular at Goucher. The basketball, lacrosse, soccer, and swimming teams draw the biggest crowds of spectators, but even those crowds are often less than a hundred people.

Most Overlooked Teams

The equestrian team is hands down the best team on campus. They always place in the top three of every competition, yet they do not receive enough recognition as a sport on campus.

School Spirit

Despite the close-knit community at Goucher, there is a serious lack of school spirit. Athletic events are not well attended by students outside the athletic social circle. Student apathy is also a problem when it comes to on-campus events. Some events are a huge success, such as Get into Goucher Day, Spring Gala, and student talent shows, but lesser established events hardly draw a crowd.

Getting Tickets

Most sporting events are free and never sell out. The men’s and women’s basketball teams are the only sports that charge for admission: $5 for adults and $2 for students and children.
