Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

In terms of race, economics, and politics, the Goucher student body is not very diverse—the majority of students are white, upper-middle-class liberals. Goucher tries to hide its lack of racial diversity from prospective students by using pictures of minority students in its brochures and Web site, even though many of the minority students in these pictures graduated several years ago. Compared to other areas in Baltimore, though, Goucher does have some religious diversity due to the large Jewish population on campus. The student population is also diverse in terms of personality, geographic background, and sexuality.

Goucher does an excellent job of making sure people of all types feel welcome on campus. The importance of appreciating and accepting diversity is preached from every corner. There are regular diversity discussions on race, religion, and sexuality, and student minority clubs sponsor several cultural programs and events. There have been a few hate incidents in past years involving vandalism and derogatory comments about homosexuality and Judaism, and students were shocked and angered when these incidents came to light. Goucher students have no tolerance for discrimination and hate. Getting through each incident as a cohesive campus brought the community closer.

Not Very Diverse

In comparison to my high school, this is a completely white campus! Yes, there are some black people and a few Asian people, but the whites are the vast majority. There are times when it seems like 90% of the students are Jewish, too, which might not be too far off. People here are pretty accepting, except for the people who do the Jewish Hillel group. They'll give you weird looks if you try to eat in their dining hall. I guess it's only for Jewish people. Almost everyone on campus is liberal. As such a liberal school, students and professors are very accepting of different sexual orientations.

Diversity Could Be Better

There is not a lot of diversity overall on campus, as far as I can tell the majority of the students are middle class, white and liberal. However, most of the students seem very accepting of others who are different from themselves.

A Mostly White Wonderland

I honestly feel like the token middle eastern.(I know I'm not) It becomes aggravating in class situations when teachers look at you for your take on the war in the middle east. As if I am a spokesperson for all middle easterns. I also struggle with connecting to my culture and heritage here. I have no one to share my heritage with.

Prism, the student organization dedicated to providing support for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered students, faculty, staff, and their allies, hosts social events, campus-wide discussions, and provides support for all students.

Political Activity

The majority of students are politically and socially liberal. There are conservative and moderate students on campus, but the liberals are most visible.

Economic Status

While students from all economic levels are represented in the student body, most hail from the upper-middle class.

Most Common Religions

The student body seems equally split between Judaism and Christianity. Goucher’s Jewish organization, Hillel, is one of the most active groups on campus and hosts a variety of events, discussions, and speakers. The Goucher Christian Fellowship is also active on and off campus.

Minority Clubs on Campus

Umoja, the African Alliance, is one of the most active clubs on campus. It hosts educational and social events to promote diversity and racial understanding. Students of all ethnicities are encouraged to join. HOLA (Hispanic Organization for Learning and Awareness) and LOTUS (Exploring the Asian Diaspora at Goucher) are becoming more active each year.
