Student Author OverviewWhat's This?

Prevalent drug use at Goucher is limited to tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana. Recently, the administration has cracked down on drug use due to several freshmen being hospitalized for alcohol poisoning in recent years, but Public Safety isn't out to hunt anyone down. Goucher has proximity rules that keep cigarette smokers at least 25 feet away from buildings, but the ashtrays are located close to the doors, so smokers usually hang around there. Alcohol and weed are common and easy to obtain on and off campus. For drinkers, the Dulaney Liquors store is a mile off campus, and there's a Beltway Fine Wine store, which has a great variety and super helpful, knowledgeable staff. Marijuana is easy to buy from other students, but weed smokers need to be careful—if Public Safety smells it in the hallway during rounds, they usually won't hesitate to cite the guilty party. Few students have access to cocaine, LSD, and mushrooms, but they are available off campus. Hard drugs are not popular at Goucher, but they're around.

On the other hand, there's also a strong sober community on campus. Many students carpool to AA meetings, and Sondheim is a substance-free dorm (with great rooms!). Moreover, students who drink, smoke, or use drugs are cool about not pressuring others to join in.

The Usual Suspects: Pot and Booze

Drugs are not a huge issue at Goucher. Mostly people smoke pot, but you never really see it unless you go looking. It's the same with drinking here as well, if you want to party you can usually find one, but it's definetly not a huge aspect of Goucher social life. I've never run into anyone doing any hardcore drugs here, and I have never felt any drug pressure or felt that I was unsafe.

They hardly do anything.

There is one "drug free" dorm building on campus, but if you don't live there, theres really no escaping it. I complained multiple times, and nothing was ever done. If you're like me and don't like to be around drugs/alcohol, you won't enjoy yourself much.

Drugs

Drugs/Alcohol are a big part of campus life for some students, but there are a whole bunch who do not partake in any form. There is no pressure to use, and users/non-users often exist in the same friend groups. The College is big on cigarettes, not a good place to try and quit. Smoking is a very social thing, and can be seen on the quad, walking to class, outside your dorm, pretty much everywhere. However, most students are very mindful and "green" so the campus isn't too littered with butts. not to mention there are ashtrays at basically every other doorway and bench. Alcohol is a big part of the social scene on weekends, but it is at most schools. Parties are usually confined to 6-15 people in a dorm room, and often hop from place to place. In the warmer weather the entire campus becomes an outside party. People tend to start drinking a little earlier, and by 1 or 2 am mostly everything has died down. Marijuana is also used by many, but again thats pretty much anywhere you go. Recently Public Safety has been getting tougher about weed, so I wouldnt recomend smoking in your room. As for other drugs, there is a moderate sized psychedelic scene (LSD, Shrooms, E ect.), but if you aren't friends with those people, you probably won't notice it's existence. In the last two years that scene has gotten a lot smaller, partially due to the increase of drug busts, also due to dealers graduating. You can get cocaine, herione, pills ect pretty easily off-campus, there is some use on campus, but it isn't very visable or wide-spread. Again, there is no pressure to try or use anything. no one judges you if you don't use. users and non-users can easilly be friends. There is a good number of people who do not use at all.
